"My Nose Has Never Looked The Same": Hunger Games Star Recollects Injury Ahead Of 2011 Filming, & The Swelling Can Be Seen If You Look Real "Deep" In The Scenes

One The Hunger Gamesstar shares his account of injuring his nose ahead of the movie's filming. The Hunger Games franchise first began filming in 2011, and the first four movies were all released in consecutive years. It's considered one of Liongate's most profitable franchises, with a sixth movie that will focus on Haymitch Abernathy's game. Furthermore, the dystopian series launched many stars' careers, including Jennifer Lawrence, who portrayed the heroine, Katniss Everdeen. Another actor was Jack Quaid, who portrayed Marvel in the first film and has since become a major star with projects like The Boys and Companion.

In an interview with IGN, Quaid shared his experience with The Hunger Games, which included a brutal injury ahead of filming. The day before shooting, the then-19-year-old actor was training with a medicine ball when it bounced too high and broke his nose. He believes that his nose has "never looked the same," and even pointed out that some scenes feature his swelling. Check out the footage below:

Right before my very first day shooting on The Hunger Games. I'm 19. It's my first movie. One of the exercises was, I would have a medicine ball and I would slam it onto the ground, pick it up, and slam it again. I'm in the gym for the first time by myself. No trainer. I take the medicine ball. I slam it. It bounces up, hits me right in the face, and I fall down, my nose starts bleeding. My nose has never looked the same. It looked a different way before this incident.

It was like, the ones in New York, when I was with the trainer, they didn't bounce. Like come on, why are they bouncing? You know because you're getting low...

If you really look deep in the background of this shot in The Hunger Games, my nose is like, it's just so swollen.

What The Injury Meant For The Hunger Games

Quaid Broke His Nose In His First Movie Role

Marvel, played by Jack Quaid, falls onto his knees after being shot with an arrow by Katniss, played by Jennifer Lawrence. Marvel is wearing a green jacket, whilst Katniss wears the same jacket in black.

Given that he compares the medicine balls to the ones in New York, it's possible that the incident happened in North Carolina since that is where the entire movie was filmed. While Quaid's case is special, given that it happened before filming, injuries are very common in movies requiring physical demands. That's the case with the Hunger Games franchise since the characters are in a fight-to-the-death situation until one victor remains. For instance, Lawrence was injured while filming The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013), as filming-related ear infections restricted her hearing.

The Hunger Games was Quaid's first-ever project, where he portrayed one of the antagonists. Despite the injury, Quaid's involvement in the movie had a larger impact on his career. Aside from a small cameo in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, the actor did not return to the franchise due to his character's death. However, Quaid was able to pursue many projects beyond the franchise, including Logan Lucky, Rampage, and 2022's Scream. He is now a rising star in Hollywood, particularly for his portrayal of Hughie in The Boys. The star is currently filming for the show's fifth and final season.

Our Take On Jack Quaid's Hunger Games Injury

It Had No Impact On His Career

While Quaid has a lot of great projects coming, including The Boys season 5 and Novacaine (2025), the actor clearly has a lot of memories about his first movie. That makes sense since it launched his career, even if it was for a small role. Still, that doesn't undermine the fact thatThe Hunger Games was a key factor in discovering the star, who has since become one of the most sought-after actors today. Plus, Quaid has quite a relatable story that will continue to live on, even for fans who are awaiting more details about the sixth movie and are simply trying to pass the time while at it.
