Naruto: New Boruto Preview Tees Up a Long-Awaited Romance for Konohamaru
The highly anticipated Chapter 18 of Boruto: Two Blue Vortexhas just released a sneak peek featuring Konohamaru Sarutobi, who is finally getting the spotlight in the new arc. While fans will have to wait a little longer to read the new chapter, the preview already teases that the new arc is about to bring some conflicting feelings to Naruto Uzumaki’s pupil in the form of a Divine Tree.
In Boruto TBV chapter #17, it is revealed that the alliance between Team 7 and the Sand Village ninjas Yodo and Araya will try to befriend the Divine Trees, Matsuri and Ryu, and later betray them if the situation arises. The team has already succeeded in separating the enemies, with Konohamaru being alone with Matsuri, since she is interested in him, because she was created based on Moegi. However, the preview of Boruto TBV chapter #18 shows that Konohamaru might have underestimated Matsuri’s feelings.

Konohamaru May Not Betray the Divine Tree After All
It is revealed in the last chapter that the Divine Tree is unable to control her feelings after seeing Konohamaru. This way, on the released page of Boruto TBV chapter #18 on Naruto’s official website, Matsuri seems clearly flustered while trying to hold a conversation with Konohamaru. Matsuri tells Konohamaru that she is nervous around him, to which he dismisses, saying that it is because it is the first time they have seen each other.
However, Matsuri points out that she is gradually starting to feel more comfortable, to the point that she feels she can be herself around him. Moreover, Matsuri asks him if he is OK with her referring to him as “Konohamaru-chan.” Even though this is an honorific used in Japanese, it's strictly used with someone really close. It's also the same way Moegi has called Konohamaru throughout the story, which hints at the underlying feelings of Moegi influencing Matsuri and opens up the door to Konohamaru seeing his friend reflecting on the Divine Tree, which could make him feel conflicted about following Shikamaru’s orders.
There Is Still Nothing Clear About the Divine Trees in Boruto
The New Enemies Could Be More Complex Than Expected
Matsuri’s response to her target has been the complete opposite of other Divine Trees, since it has amplified the feelings of Moegi, while Ryu appears to be the complete opposite of Shinki, being more casual and friendly than Gaara’s adoptive son, who has a serious personality. This can also be seen with Sasuke’s clone, Hidari, whose reaction to Sarada hints at a sad truth.
Yet these new developments tease the possibility that Boruto is setting up the Divine Trees to be deeper than fans expected as sentient beings instead of mindless monsters. Also, this could also mean building up the romance in this arc around Sarada and Boruto after Sumire’s words. Nevertheless, fans should wait until the Boruto: Two Blue Vortex chapter #18 release to know what the story will bring.
