Netflix's 2024 Action Thriller Movie Climbs All-Time Viewership Chart In Updated Top 3 Ranking

Netflix saw a massive record-breaking year in 2024, with many original shows and movies ranking on the all-time Most Popular list. After making a successful transition from a disc rental service to a trailblazing streaming service with a selection of acclaimed original programming, the streamer stepped into the realm of film production in 2015. Netflix's movie output ranges from original features commissioned for the service, to distribution of titles from across the globe.

Despite its ambitions and overall effect on the streaming market, Netflix contended with the film industry for its place within the Hollywood landscape. For many established voices across the industry, the streaming release exclusivity has prompted divisive responses over whether Netflix's strategies fulfill the potential filmmakers can achieve without a theatrical release, and whether such a strategy should qualify features for entry into festivals and awards ceremonies. Even with this hotly debated topic, the streamer has released over 100 movies in 2024 alone. Damsel and Under Paris were among the few to crack the Most Popular list.

Carry-On Is Netflix's Third Best-Performing English-Language Release

Taron Egerton's Action-Thriller Is A Holiday Release Hit

Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, Carry-On is now climbing the ranks of the Most Popular movie list. The movie sees Taron Egerton portray TSA agent Ethan Kopek, who finds himself coerced into aiding Jason Bateman's mysterious mercenary in sabotaging a flight with a deadly nerve agent during the Christmas Eve rush. Carry-On was met with a mostly positive reception from critics but slightly less warm responses from viewers. Nevertheless, the thriller has been setting viewership records, achieving 97 million views within the first few days.

After debuting on the most-viewed movies list last week at No. 5, the updated Netflix charts show that Carry-On has entered the top three most-highest-performing English-language films with an accumulated viewership of 160.1 million views since it premiered in December. Carry-On now falls behind the Dwayne Johnson and Ryan Reynolds-led Red Notice and Adam McKay's Don't Look Up, which sit at first and second place respectively, while placing itself ahead of Reynolds and Shawn Levy's The Adam Project in fourth.

Our Thoughts On Carry-On's Netflix Ranking Success

Despite Being A Hit, Don't Expect Kopek To Catch Another Flight

With a strong Carry-On cast and premise that harkens to the foundations that helped Die Hard become a success, it is somewhat unsurprising to see the movie become a hit on the platform. Alongside the evocation of the iconic 1980s action feature, the movie's release during the holiday period ensured that a larger share of the audience would have the time to watch the feature at home. With Carry-On proving itself a success, many may wonder if a sequel is in the works.

Despite its impact, however, Collet-Serra has confirmed that there are currently no plans to develop any form of continuation at the moment. While Kopek and the story of Carry-On may be grounded for the time being, its chart-topping success is still worth celebrating.
