Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender Star Daniel Dae Kim Explains How Seasons 2 And 3 Feel "Bigger" Than Season 1

Avatar: The Last Airbender star Daniel Dae Kim shines a light on the status of the next two seasons of the Netflix adaptation, revealing how things will differ from season 1. The fantasy series adapts the beloved Nickelodeon animated series into live-action, following the powerful Avatar as he learns to master the four elements and brings peace to the world. Part of the Avatar: The Last Airbender cast, Kim plays Fire Lord Ozai, the leader of the Fire Nation who launches a campaign to conquer the other three nations.

As ScreenRant caught up with Kim during the NYU Tisch Gala red carpet event, the actor teases how Avatar: The Last Airbender seasons 2 and 3 are a whole new experience when compared to the production of the 2024 season. According to Kim, the production has seen the cast and crew step out of the studio with more location shoots, as the show's development became grander across season 2 and the soon-to-be-filmed season 3. Check out Dae Kim's explanation below:

ScreenRant: Does season 2 feel bigger than season 1?

Daniel Dae Kim: It does. It’s very different. We’re on location a lot more, and season 3, which we’re about to start, is even bigger than season 2.

What Kim's Response Means For Future Seasons Of Avatar: The Last Airbender

Ozai's Plans Will Push Him To Have A More Hands-on Approach

While the response for Avatar: The Last Airbender season 1 was mixed upon release, the series did provide the streaming service with satisfying viewing figures that guaranteed that a full adaptation of the entire animated series would be produced. The viewing figures for season 1 saw the series immediately reach number 1 on the streamer in the originals categories and overall Top 10 during the first week of release. As such, it is clear that a grander scope shows that Netflix is confident in the series' success.

Despite the acclaim of Avatar: The Last Airbender, it isn't without its faults. The live-action show can improve one of the series' best characters.

Furthermore, Kim's increased presence in the production of seasons 2 and 3 does affirm the greater role Ozai will have as the show progresses. While Ozai was seen within the Fire Nation through glimpses into Zuko's (Dallas Liu) past and looks at the power behind the throne, the Fire Nation's response to the Avatar and the return of Sozin's comet will see the Fire Lord become a more active player in the series, be it through his influence on his children or his plots to dominate the globe. However, Netflix series-original scenes could give Ozai an expanded role.

When audiences return to the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender in season 2, several new storylines will be introduced. Alongside the Gaang's journey to master the elements with new mentors and allies, Zuko will be sent on a perspective-shifting journey as his more villainous sibling Azula (Elizabeth Yu) sets out to restore honor to her family. As such, many newcomers to the franchise may be keen to see just how the series will expand its scope, while longtime fans may wonder if a bigger season could offer new scenarios.
