Netflix's One Piece Welcomes New Faces to Season 2 Cast Including Luffy's Dad

Netflix’s live-action One Piece series is gearing up for the premiere of its second season with a litany of cast announcements, including who will be playing Monkey D. Dragon, the father of Iñaki Godoy’s Straw Hat Luffy. Actor Rigo Sanchez is set to play Dragon, Yonda Thomas will voice Igaram, the captain of the Arabasta royal guard, and James Hiroyuki Liao will play Ipponmatsu, an arms shop owner in Loguetown. The official One Piece social media handle made the announcement via X.

Dragon is not only Luffy’s father but also the leader of the Revolutionary Army, whose sole purpose is to take down the World Government. Meanwhile, Igaram serves as Vivi’s (played by Charithra Chandran) trusted ally throughout the Whiskey Peak and Alabasta arc that season 2 is set to explore. Lastly, Ipponmatsu is the weapons dealer that Zoro gets his Sandai Kitetsu, a powerful sword that is claimed to be cursed.

Who Else Has Been Cast for One Piece Season 2?

Several More Actors Were Announced Outside The Core Three

Alongside the three new faces joining the cast, another three actors were announced for slightly more minor roles. Sophia Anne Caruso is set to play Miss Goldenweek, Anton David Jeftha will portray K.M., and Mark Penwill as Chess.

Miss Goldenweek is a member of Baroque Works named Marianne, who partners with Mr. 3, both of whom serve Alabasta arc antagonist Sir Crocodile (portrayed by Joe Manganiello). K.M, also known as Kuromarimo, is the magistrate during the villainous Wapol's rule on Drum Island, where season 2 is set to introduce future Straw Hat member Tony Tony Chopper. Meanwhile, Chess serves as Wapol’s minister of defense on Drum Island.

Are All These Fresh Faces The Right Choice?

There’ve been some reactions to the cast announcements on social media, most of which question some of the casting decisions. However, much of the chatter is much ado about nothing. Besides Dragon, for whom most folks seem keen on the actor chosen, are minor characters that probably will never be revisited again in this abridged retelling of the One Piece story. Others believe the cast should represent more Asian actors as well. However, the diverse casting choices benefit the story, as one of One Piece's core lessons is building peace in the world amongst its diverse civilizations, economic classes, and species.

With all the casting announcements, the current hype in the ongoing manga, and the anticipation of the anime’s return to the Egghead Island arc, 2025 is shaping up to be another great year for One Piece.
