New 2025 Thriller Movie Starring The Boys & Yellowjackets Stars Debuts With Strong Rotten Tomatoes Score
So far, 2025 has started slowly with a slew of new movies in theaters, but there seems to be a positive trend for one genre. January and February are usually associated with the term “dump months,” as studios often reserve this period to release films they believe won’t perform well critically. Such exceptions to the seeming trend of “dump months” started their own trend, as films in the thriller and horror genre that weren’t released during the Halloween season started congregating toward January release dates, with Leigh Whannell’s Wolf Man being one of this year’s examples.
Companion Debuts With Impressive Rotten Tomatoes Score

With Companion releasing this month, the thriller has scored an impressive Rotten Tomatoes score. Starring The Boys and Yellowjackets' Jack Quaid and Sophie Thatcher, the upcoming film is about a weekend getaway that runs amok when a subservient droid built for companionship turns haywire. The film with the artificial intelligence premise is written and directed by Drew Hancock, who previously worked include Mr. Pickles and My Dead Ex.
At the time of this writing, Companion has a 96% Rotten Tomatoes score from critics with 23 reviews so far. Reviews praise the performances of its ensemble cast, its darkly comedic undertones, and strong themes and deep explorations of abusive relationships and A.I. One review called it the first great film of 2025 and a, “funny, fast-moving, meticulously crafted horror-thriller with a killer performance from lead Sophie Thatcher.”
