One Piece Is Overdue For a New Movie, And I Know the Perfect Team to Make It
It's been a few years since One Piece Film: Red debuted back in 2022, meaning it's high time for the franchise to think about producing a new movie and there's one team in particular that's already done wonders with the best filler episode ever released. Director Megumi Ishitani, Screenwriter Momoka Toyoda, and Character Designer/Animation Director Keisuke Mori came together to adapt a One Piece side novel that follows the lives of everyday civilians getting caught up in the heroic adventures of the Straw Hat Pirates.
One Piece Fan Letter is more than just a filler episode, it’s an artistic celebration of the Straw Hat's journey thus far, reviewing their historical achievements through the lens of the people most affected by the radical changes their party has brought about. Episode #1015 follows a young fan of Nami, who admires the Cat Burglar for never causing harm or enacting violence, unlike other pirates. Through her perspective, One Piece’s world becomes much more terrifying with the looming threat of war and the cruel methods marines will use to obstruct the Straw Hats.
One Piece’s New Movie Should Be Delegated to Megumi Ishitani and The Dream Team
It’s Time For Their Next Big Challenge
In a recent interview with Anime News Network, Ishitani, Toyoda, and Mori expressed interest in taking on a larger project, such as a feature-length film and script. While they may not have had One Piece in mind, who better to take up the mantle for a new movie than the team behind the best filler episode, One Piece Fan Letter? Further revelations in the same interview go to show how much thought went into the story, with Ishitani and Toyoda carefully devising how to arrange this unique amalgamation.
In the last scene, there's a shot where the girl tears up the fan letter. At first, I wanted to have her tear it into smaller pieces, like confetti, because I really like scenes where cherry blossoms or flower petals are flying all around. But while I was thinking about that shot, I actually received my very first fan letter ever from a viewer. After reading it, I changed the scene so that she only tore it in half. And then I put the fan letter carefully taped back together at the end. It made me realize that something so precious ought to be handled with care.
A movie would no doubt present its fair share of issues and complications, but the process of building an episode and a film is not too unfamiliar. Ishitani and her team had already devised a good strategy when taking up One Piece Fan Letter and could easily replicate that given the chance.

Who Better Than The People Behind This Grand Anniversary Episode
With the success of One Piece Fan Letter, fans would be thrilled to see the return of the creative minds that helped put together the most thought-provoking filler episode to date. Megumi Ishitani has already proven that her team has the necessary qualities equipped to take on a larger project for the One Piece franchise after bringing to light the faces often obscured by the story’s overarching narrative. This unique lens resonated with fans and created a newfound attraction to the series that extended to more than just the main cast.

One Piece Chapter #1138 might have subtly set up Shanks' final opponent for the final war of the series.
Ishitani recounts the painstaking process of taking One Piece’s short stories and condensing them into a single digestible episode. From the original idea to the storyboarding to the animation, the path was filled with highs and lows as the team struggled with what to keep and how best to represent the multiple narratives showcased. Each step had a level of care reflected in the finalized version by the number of professional and volunteer hands that helped to create it.
