One Silo Season 2 Story Makes It A Perfect Follow-Up To One Of 2023's Best Sci-Fi Shows

After seeing one story development in Silo season 2, it is hard not to notice how the show could qualify as the perfect follow-up to one of 2023's best sci-fi shows. Based on Hugh Howey's Silo books, the Apple TV+ sci-fi show adopts many genre tropes but stands out because of its unique post-apocalyptic setting and concepts. In its two-season runtime, so far, Silo has been able to deliver a sense of novelty and instill curiosity in viewers in ways most sci-fi shows cannot.

In more ways than one, it is a distinctive addition to the sci-fi genre, and its future installments will likely further cement its place as one of the standout shows of modern television. However, despite this, Silo seems to share many intriguing similarities with one of 2023's best science fiction shows. Although Silo and the show cannot officially be connected, the narrative intersections between them suggest Silo could be seen as its spiritual successor.

Silo's AI Story Makes It A Perfect Follow-Up To A Murder At The End Of The World

Both Shows Raise Questions About The Ethical Implications Of AI

In A Murder at the End of the World, a group of individuals is carefully selected to attend a billionaire's retreat in a remote location before they realize that someone is killing them one by one. The show also introduces an advanced AI system in its early moments, dubbed Ray, which not only has vast information stored in its database but is also used as an advanced security system by the billionaire. Ray is omnipresent at the retreat and keeps a close eye on all the attendees. The show's ending also reveals that to ensure the billionaire's safety, the AI started plotting the attendees' murders.

Ray almost comes off a less advanced version of the Algorithm from Silo. Silo season 2 hints that all activities in Silo 18 are secretly overseen by an advanced AI system, which ensures the underground structure's security. As Silo season 2 episode 9's ending suggests, the AI also threatens to destroy the entire silo if things get out of hand and the citizens breach the rules and endanger the stability of the system.

Given how dangerous AI systems are featured in many shows and movies, the AI parallels between the two are not enough to call A Murder at the End of the World a prequel to Silo. However, a closer look at both the sci-fi shows and their technologies reveals many intriguing connections. These connections are obviously coincidental, but it is still fascinating to theorize how the shows could be set in the same universe.

Other Similarities Between A Murder At The End Of The World & Silo Explained

A Murder At The End Of The World's Timeline Makes It Silo's Prequel

A Murder at the End of the World is seemingly set in the present world, or, at most, in the near future. Silo, on the other hand, unfolds hundreds of years in the future. The billionaire Andy Ronson, in A Murder at the End of the World, builds many silo-like underground bunkers while anticipating a world-ending event. This could make him the creator of the silos from the Apple TV+ series and, perhaps, also the person who triggered the world-ending event.

Since Silo is based on Hugh Howey's book trilogy and A Murder at the End of the World is an original show created by Brit Marling and Zalbatmanglij, it is impossible for the two shows to be set in the same world.

Ronson also creates an AR helmet for his son, Zoomer, allowing the child to see the world around him from a completely different lens. The AR helmet in A Murder at the End of the Worldcould easily qualify as a prototype of the helmet used to deceive the cleaners in Silo. Since Silo is based on Hugh Howey's book trilogy and A Murder at the End of the World is an original show created by Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij, it is impossible for the two shows to be set in the same world. Their parallels are still interesting because they give a glimpse of the direction in which the sci-fi genre is heading.
