Original The Office Star Set To Reprise Role In Upcoming Reboot
The reboot of The Office has officially confirmed the return of one of the original stars. The original mockumentary sitcom, which ran for nine seasons between 2005 and 2013, followed the professional and personal lives of the staff of the Scranton, Pennsylvania branch of the fictional paper company Dunder Mifflin. The upcoming The Office reboot, which rumors say will be called The Paper and is set to air on Peacock, will be presented as footage shot by the same in-universe documentary crew and is set in the offices of a struggling Midwestern newspaper.
Per Variety, Oscar Nuñez is set to reprise his original role as accountant Oscar Martinez in the upcoming spinoff of The Office. While he is not set to be the central character of the series, he is said to be part of the "character mix." While it is unclear if that means he will be a regular character, a recurring one, or otherwise, it has been confirmed that he has been a part of the original script for the pilot from its inception.
He joins a cast that already includes Domhnall Gleeson, Sabrina Impacciatore, Melvin Gregg, Chelsea Frei, Ramona Young, Gbemisola Ikumelo, Alex Edelman, Tim Key, and Eric Rahill, none of whom previously appeared on The Office.
What This Means For The Office Reboot
More Original Characters Could Appear
This official confirmation that at least one original member of the Office cast cements the connection that the new series has to the original sitcom. Prior to this casting announcement, the only connection that the new series had to the flagship show was offscreen. This includes the return of creator Greg Daniels, who is now working in collaboration with Nathan for You's Michael Koman, as well as executive producers Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant.
NBC's The Office is not the first installment in the franchise, as it is itself a remake of the British series of the same name.
Oscar, who appeared in all nine seasons of The Office and was a series regular from the middle of season 2 through season 9, is so far the only original character who is slated to return. However, his presence potentially opens the door to further appearances from Nuñez's former co-stars, which include Steve Carell, Rainn Wilson, John Krasinski, Jenna Fischer, Brian Baumgartner, Kate Flannery, Angela Kinsey, Ed Helms, and Mindy Kaling. It would likely be easier to keep their presence a secret if they had cameo roles rather than the more substantial appearance that Nuñez seems set to have.

Oscar's Appearance Could Take Multiple Forms
While details of Oscar's return in the reboot of The Office are still under wraps, there are multiple ways he could appear in the new series. The finale of the original show saw him running for state senator, though he still worked at Dunder Mifflin, so being part of the paper company could put him in the path of the show's newspaper quite easily, given their natural need for paper. Alternatively, in the years since the original show ended, Oscar could have finally quit his job and sought accounting work elsewhere, leading to him being employed at the paper.
