Pokémon TCG: 10 Coolest Destined Rivals Cards Revealed (So Far)

The Pokémon TCG has just received some of the first spoilers for the Destined Rivals set coming out on May 30th. There aren’t that many cards out there yet, but there are some cool ones. And there are more that are good guesses, as we know which Japanese sets this one will combine. Either way, it’s likely that a lot of us players are going to want to get our hands on this set, particularly for The Glory of Team Rocket cards.

Destined Rivals is likely to have the same problem as Prismatic Evolutions, as scalpers have been picking up a lot of the stock before players can get their hands on it. This has driven prices on singles of the best cards in the setup higher than they should have been, and the company is struggling to print more cards for the rest of us. Even so, with the spoilers begun, we can start to see which ones are going to be amazing.

10 Arven’s Greedent

Colorless

While this one may not be the most exciting on the list, it does look pretty neat to me. You get 2 Arven’s Sandwiches back in your hand every time you play this one to the table, which will let you heal for quite a lot, and the art on the AR version looks really nice. Its actual attack only does 50 damage, but you are more likely to use this as a support to get that big heal.

According to sources, GameStop will no longer be accepting pre-orders for Pokémon TCG products online or in-store to encourage more foot traffic.

This is a particularly good piece of tech to use with Arven’s Mabosstiff ex, which can do some big damage and can be kept quite healthy with those sandwiches. It’s a nice combo, and while it may not be the strongest, it is quite fun.

9 Garchomp C Lv. X

Colorless

This one deals with changing up Damage Counters. You will have the option to remove all damage counters from all of your Pokémon SP when you put this Garchomp on top of an Active Garchomp C. While it doesn’t have great attacks, that power is useful, and it can use any attacks, Powers, or the Poke-Body of the Garchomp C underneath it.

It’s a cool ability, but it isn’t the best out of all the cards we have seen so far. Not seeing that many just yet, we will have to wait and see if this card becomes a lot more powerful, but at the moment, it just isn’t quite as cool as the other options.

8 Misty’s Psyduck

Water-Type

This one is both a bit of a joke, at least in my eyes, and also really cool. It can only do a 30-damage attack, and it doesn’t have a lot of HP, but it can be extremely annoying to your opponent, and that is the kind of card that makes me happy. This is due to Psyduck’s Slapstick Jump.

The Slapstick Jump can be used while Psyduck is on your bench, which lets you put it back on top of your deck, therefore healing it and being able to bring it back out whenever you want to. It’s annoying, and it will make your opponent think about whether they want to waste the attack on it or not. It will force them to be able to take it out in one hit, which is just a nice way to get them to think about it.

7 Rocket’s Mewtwo ex

Basic Dark-Type

This new version of Mewtwo ex is a Dark-type Pokemon with three moves listed on it. One of them, Darkness Switch, can switch all damage counters on this Pokémon to the Defending one, which is a big deal and has big effects on the game. It also helps keep Mewtwo alive, which is important as Mewtwo’s “ex” status makes them a little extra vulnerable as your opponent gets 2 Prize cards if they defeat this one.

We don’t have many, if any, confirmed spoilers forThe Glory of Team Rocket set beyond this one and the other Mewtwo just yet, but hopefully, we will get more soon!

The other two moves are more typical, although they do cost a lot of resources. However, there is a chance you can put the Defending Pokémon to sleep with Hypnoblast. That said, beyond Darkness Switch, the stats feel fairly unremarkable, especially with that “ex” tag on the end. Psyburn takes a large amount of energy to pull off, and that makes me not want to use it unless my opponent is using a card that’s causing a lot of damage counters.

6 Sacred Ash - Trainer

Item

If you are playing Misty’s Gyarados, this item will help you recoup some of those cards you discarded from the graveyard. This allows you to shuffle up to 5 Pokémon back into your deck, which can allow you to use Gyarados’ ability even more without running out of cards. You will likely want to pick Misty’s Pokémon to put back in, as that will help you the most.

10 Pokémon TCG Card Artworks You Didn't Know Tell A Story

Some cards in the Pokémon Trading Card Game tell a story of love, life, and betrayal, but only if fans know which cards to put together.

There are a lot of options with this card, and you should be able to put it to good use, even without a Gyarados. Recouping your Pokémon, or getting that one copy of a Super Rare card back in your deck, is a great option.

5 Cynthia’s Garchomp ex

Fighting-Type

This is not a Garchomp C, at least not that we know of, but it is still a type of Garchomp and it is actually pretty cool. It has two different attacks that can do 100 and 260 damage each, and it doesn’t take that much energy to do so. However, the second attack will force you to discard all the energy on the card, which isn’t fun, but it is well worth the big attack.

The first attack, the one that does 100 damage, allows you to draw until you have 6 cards in your hand. That can be a game-changer, especially if your card count is low or if you are searching for that one good card. It’s a great ability to sift through your deck, which makes this card pretty cool.

4 Ethan’s Adventure - Trainer

Supporter

This one allows you to get 3 cards out of your deck and into your hand. It can fetch any combination of Ethan’s Pokémon and Basic Fire Energy cards. This pairs really well with Ethan’s Ho-Oh ex, and it will work well with any big Fire-deck that has this combination. It may be a little circumstantial, but that can help you out in the long run.

It’s always great to have a good Supporter, and this set is looking like it will get a fair number of them due to the combination of Japanese sets that it contains. Not every card in this list is 100% confirmed to be in the combined set, but it is likely that this one is due to the fact that we know Ho-Oh ex is coming.

3 Cynthia’s Roserade

Grass-type

This one is a card I have seen circling the forums since it was announced, and it seems to be one of the better cards. The Glory Cheer ability alone makes this card seem great, as it increases any of Cynthia’s Pokémon’s attacks by 30, which can then be further modified by targeting a Weakness.

It may not always come off the way you want it too, but that is secondary, as there is also a Leaf Steps attack that can do 80 damage plus the extra 30 damage. It’s also not an “ex” Pokémon, so you won’t get penalized if Roserade gets taken out. The 130 HP also feels high for a grass-type, making it an overall win to take Roserade to the big leagues.

2 Ethan’s Ho-Oh ex

Fire-Type

This one looks pretty cool, even if the abilities themselves were not as good. However, the abilities actually look quite good as well. The first one, Golden Flame, allows you to attach up to 2 Basic Fire Energy from your hand to 1 of Ethan’s Benched Pokémon. This is a great way to beef up your Pokémon if you need a way to get more energy out of your hand faster.

Additionally, the second option may take a lot of energy, but it could be done with the use of a different Ho-Oh ex, and it does 160 damage. It also heals 50 damage from each of your Pokémon, which is a huge amount of damage that you can undo. This feels much more like an “ex” level ability, and that puts it higher than the Mewtwo ex on my list.

1 Misty’s Gyarados

Water-Type

This one looks great, and it’s generally quite hard for a Gyarados to not be high on a list in a set that it comes in. This one is not an ex, but it feels like it might as well be. It evolves from Misty’s Magikarp, and it has two fairly big attacks. The first only costs 1 energy, and it can deal 70x damage. Depending on the number of Misty’s Pokémon you have in your deck, you will then do an additional 70 damage for every Misty’s Pokémon you discard in your top 7 cards.

Players have discovered that two cards from a recent Pokémon Trading Card Game set tell a wholesome story that's similar to a fairy tale.

That can end up being a ridiculous amount of damage for 1 energy, which you likely have after Magikarp evolves. The other attack is a 3-energy attack that just does 120 damage, which feels like a great attack that can take out most Pokémon that you may be facing in Pokémon TCG Destined Rivals.
