Pokémon TCG Pocket: Everything We Know About New Leaked Expansion
Since the first mini-expansion in December, Mythical Island, in Pokémon TCG Pocket, rumors have been swirling about what will be released next, but it appears we don't have long to wait. The game launched last year with a lot of fanfare, pulling in staggering numbers of players straight away. Regular content has kept players engaged, but developers will be hoping the biggest expansion so far can keep up the games' popularity.
In December, the Mythical Island expansion dropped, but with only 68 base cards, meaning most players will have completed or nearly completed the set by now and will be anticipating a new challenge. Trading in Pokémon TCG Pocket is on the horizon, but the game is primarily about collecting cards and a new set is just what is needed to keep the game's momentum going.
Potential Date Of New expansion
New Cards To Drop In January
While nothing official has been confirmed, PokeGirlLauren on X (formerly Twitter), who correctly reported the date of the Mythical Island expansion, has stated that she expects the new expansion to drop on January 29.She has no connection to the developers, so this shouldn't be taken as a guarantee, but she has been accurate with all of her updates so far ahead of them being officially announced. This gives players plenty of time to prepare themselves to have the best chances of collecting all the new cards on offer or to collect any remaining ones needed from the first two sets.
The initial cards, Genetic Apex, were given the pack name A1 before being followed by Mythical Island A1a, and the new currently unnamed expansion is set to be A2. With this news, an update from the official channels is expected shortly. There have been no rumors or leaks about the expected launch of trading in Pokémon TCG Pocket, but this could be linked to the launch of the new cards.
What Cards Are Rumored To Be Included
A Return To Johto
The majority of the Genetic Apex set was based around Generation 1 and the Kanto Pokémon, with a few others from later generations thrown in. Despite being headlined by Gen 2's Celebi, Mythical Island again largely featured Kanto-based Pokémon. This has led many to assume that A2 may switch to Gen 2 and Johto.Further promo cards for TCGP are also expected to be released with A2, but it is unknown if these will be part of the current promo A set or a new one entirely.
A jump to the Johto Generation makes sense and there are rumored to be an additional 230 cards set to be added to Pokémon TCG Pocket as part of this collection. Gen 2 had 100 new Pokémon, making for some exciting prospects. For potential featured and ex cards, it could bring two new sets of Legendaries. Ho-Oh and Lugia have long been favorites for fans and have ex cards in the standard Pokémon TCG game.
There are also rumors of a potential new tier of card rarity, Rainbow Rarity. These have the potential to be immersive, like the rarest cards currently available in the game, but their in-game value is yet to be confirmed.
Another likely inclusion would be the Legendary Dogs Entei, Raikou, and Suicine, who could all dominate the meta. Finally, the starter Pokémon's final evolutions have all featured heavily in events so far; Typhlosion, Feraligatr and Meganium are all expected to be highlighted. However, if it is Gen 2 that features in the new expansion, we can expect to see all the remaining Pokémon from Johto that haven't yet been released to receive some form of card.
Potential Changes For Players
What Players Need To Be Aware Of
One of the biggest changes when Mythical Island dropped, which is expected to carry on with A2, is that each set has its own Pack Points. That means that there is no point saving your Pack Points from the current expansion in the hope of using them as soon as the new cards are released. With so many new cards potentially on offer, Pack Points look set to become more important to complete collections.
What has been confirmed is that Pack Hourglasses will be carried over across sets. So, if you have completed the current collections, it is worth just opening your two daily packs and stacking up any hourglasses you earn to give you a head start on the set. This can also be done with Wonder Stamina, giving you lots of possible picks for special cards when they are released.
At both the launch of the game and with the Mythical Island expansion, further solo battles were added to Pokémon TCG Pocket, giving trainers the opportunity to battle decks based around each of the new ex cards. It is expected that these will once again be added, along with the great rewards on offer. These have previously included bonus packs, additional hourglasses and shop tokens to further buy items with. While not yet confirmed, the A2 expansion appears to be just around the corner with a host of new cards and opportunities for players in Pokémon TCG Pocket.
