Pokémon TCG Pocket Sales Surge With Release of Space-Time Smackdown

Pokémon TCG Pocket saw its already-impressive sales increase significantly with the release of its latest expansion, according to a new report. Pokémon TCG Pocket launched in October to strong sales figures, with the game reportedly bringing in $3 million a day during its opening weeks. Sales figures peaked in November with the release of Mythical Island, as the game passed $200 million in sales in just over a month. While sales reportedly slowed during the month of January, the release of Space-Time Smackdown caused another huge spike in sales along with the game passing another important milestone.

According to PocketGamer.biz, Pokémon TCG Pocket's sales surged last week after Space-Time Smackdown's release, with the game earning an estimated $39.1 million over its first four days. The new set helped push Pokémon TCG Pocket's overall sales to an estimated $500 million in less than 100 days, becoming only the second Pokémon mobile game to do so. By comparison, Pokémon GO generated $500 million in just 72 days, although it benefited from a major worldwide surge in interest.

Pokémon TCG Pocket's Big Sales Shows Game Has Legs

The Game's Strong Sales Indicates That Player Base Is Sticking Around

The spike in sales is good news for Pokémon TCG Pocket's long-term future, as it means that - at least so far - the game is holding people's interest. While sales had declined over the month of January due to a lack of new content, sales reportedly spiked to record highs once the new set came out. That means that more people were willing to spend money to get the new cards, especially with a major set expansion like Space-Time Smackdown. While the game's various events might not drive significant sales, it seems the prospect of collecting new cards will push people to spend money.

Currently, players can spend money on three different items in PokémonTCG Pocket. The first is the monthly premium pass, which allows players to open a third "free" pack per day. The second are various bundles that include premium accessories and PokeGold. The third item is PokeGold on its own, which players can spend to reduce the time needed before a new pack can be opened. PokeGold is only spent when players run out of Pack Hourglasses, with one PokeGold reducing wait time by two hours.

Clearly, Pokémon TCG Pocket is a big hit for The Pokémon Company and DeNA. What will be interesting to see is how long the surge caused by Space-Time Smackdown will last. Sales already dropped to under $8 million yesterday, so this latest sales spike might not last very long.

Our guess is that we'll see similar spikes as new sets come out, which is probably why Pokémon TCG Pocket is aiming to release mini-sets in between larger releases. Not only does it keep players on their toes, it's also good business.
