Rebecca Ferguson's Silo Season 3 Role Addressed By Showrunner As Book 2 Adaptation Raises Questions

This article includes spoilers for Hugh Howey's "Silo" novels.

Rebecca Ferguson's role in Siloseason 3 is clarified by showrunner Graham Yost, with the book adaptation raising questions. In the books on which the sci-fi thriller is based, Juliette Nichols' role is still important but presented somewhat differently. For instance, in the second novel, Shift, the character that Ferguson plays doesn't appear until the last part. That has caused some speculation about how much Ferguson will appear in the already-confirmed Silo season 3.

In comments to TVLine, Yost gives some spoilers about the Shift novel. In the process, however, he confirmed that Ferguson would still be present and that the Mission: Impossible franchise star will still have a significant part to play in the upcoming installment of the hit thriller series. Read the quote below:

“In the book Shift, Juliette doesn’t appear until like the last page, right? It’s about this silo [No. 18], but it’s also the origin story of the whole silo project. I would say that we have Rebecca Ferguson playing Juliette, and she is not just going to be in the last scene of the season. Juliette would be a big part” [of season 3]”

What Yost's Comments Mean For Silo Season 3 & Beyond

The Show Has Already Tinkered With A Smaller Role For Juliette

Yost's comments were shared ahead of the Silo season 2 finale, which debuts Friday, January 17 on Apple TV+. It's been a season where Ferguson, the top-billed star and one of the executive producers, is present and crucial without being the main focus. Her main storyline has been with the strange Solo (played by The White Lotus season 1 actor Steve Zahn) while other characters have been put in the spotlight.

This is evident early on in season 2, which makes excellent use of the extended Silo cast. Less than midway through the season, the thriller takes the time to zero in on the tragic love story between Judge Meadows (Tanya Moodie) and Bernand Holland (Tim Robbins). Both are villainous, albeit the series does take time to establish why they believe their actions are what is best for thousands of people.

Juliette has a bigger role in Dust, which could serve as the basis for the fourth and final season of the thriller adaptation, but the drama has already done a solid job of evolving its ensemble. That does have its drawbacks, however, because of how crucial Ferguson's appeal has been to the show's initial popularity.

Our Take On The Size Of Ferguson's Silo Role

She Should Be The Main Focus

Part of what made Silo season 1 work as well as it did, slowly gaining attention as it went along, was that it was essentially a conspiracy thriller. One person, Juliette Nichols, stood up against a shady system with help from people who were sympathetic to her side. The second installment has admirably tried to go in a more expansive direction, but with mixed results. Given that the Apple TV+ adaptation hasn't been afraid to deviate from the source material, it should try to capture more of the urgency in Juliette's story.
