Representative Tom McClintock (R-California) has introduced a bill that would amend the landmark 1964 Wilderness Act by opening all federal wilderness areas to mountain bikes. Proponents argue the measure would improve public access to public lands, while opponents (among them, the International Mountain Biking Association and the Wilderness Society) say it would harm conservation efforts and detract from these areas’ wild nature.
