Resident Alien's Grey Aliens Lack The 1 Power That Every Other Extraterrestrial On The Show Has

Nearly every species in Resident Alien has been proven capable of one very specific trick, but it's something the Greys are incapable of. The show portrays extraterrestrial life as far more advanced than humanity, not only in technological advances, but also from a biological standpoint. However, Resident Alien's Grey Aliens only really have Earth's native species beat on the tech side of things. Regardless, Resident Alien season 3's ending proves showrunner Chris Sheridan isn't ready to move on from the enormous threat the Greys pose to Earth.

Alan Tudyk's Harry Vanderspeigle and his people have an unpleasant relationship with the Greys, as they have a long history of being at each other's throats. Given the size of the galaxy, it's unsurprising that the show's spacefaring species have developed dynamics of this sort, but the scale of the inky void also makes it far more surprising that nearly every alien can do the same thing - other than the Greys.

The Greys Are Pretty Much The Only Resident Alien Species That Can't Shapeshift

The Greys always appear in their known form

Although certain people can see Harry's real face in Resident Alien, his molecular transformation into human form is often enough to conceal his true appearance. This is also true of Heather, Edi Patterson's Blue Avian character, and also Resident Alien season 4's new villain - the Mantid. The only alien character who hasn't yet been confirmed to share this ability is the unnamed blue figure eaten by the Mantid in Resident Alien season 3's finale - but it's possible his species can actually transform. On the other hand, the Greys would have used the skill by now if they could.

The show gives the Greys an alternative way of blending in with humans. Instead of physically transforming, the Grey Aliens created Grey/human hybrids to serve as their operatives on Earth. The hybrids all look exactly like regular humans, albeit very attractive ones. The development of the cross-bred species was to aid in the Grey's surveillance and eventual domination of the planet. Their ultimate goal was to transform Earth's atmosphere, as it's unsuitable to support pure Grey life. It's an elegant solution, despite being for a nefarious scheme, but it's also far less streamlined than shapeshifting would be.

Why The Greys Can't Shapeshift In Resident Alien

The showrunner has tried to keep the race's depiction as faithful as possible to folklore

Despite appearing in a sci-fi dramedy show, the Greys are based on genuine accounts of those who believe they have experienced contact with alien life. Weirdly, these individuals all tend to arrive at the same physical description of the beings that took them. In short, the Greys in Resident Alien are a canonized version of how the race has been depicted for decades in real-world folklore. Shapeshifting isn't generally believed to be within their skill set in these stories, so Resident Alien has also withheld that ability from the race in the show.
