Ryan Gosling Faced Off With Bradley Cooper In This Underrated Crime Drama That's Now On Netflix
Bradley Cooper and Ryan Gosling's 2013 movie The Place Beyond The Pinesis entirely underrated, and now that it's streaming on Netflix, it's absolutely worth the watch. Ryan Gosling and Bradley Cooper have an interesting filmography, especially compared alongside one another. Both rose to prominence in the industry around the same time, and they've had some similar roles over the years, such as Gosling's role in Crazy, Stupid, Love and Cooper's in Valentine's Day.
However, these actors have long followed unique paths more generally, with Cooper known for his parts in major studio comedies like The Hangover (and its sequels) and Cooper often starring in indie movies—although he also had major roles, such as in The Notebook, as well. The Place Beyond the Pines proves beyond a doubt that these two actors shine opposite each other, however, even in a movie where their stories are more intertwined than directly overlapping. Nevertheless, The Place Beyond The Pines sees stunning performances from Gosling and Cooper, and I cannot believe how underrated it's been.
The Place Beyond The Pines Features Great Performances From Gosling & Cooper
Each Actor Has His Own Arc, And They Both Shine Equally
The Place Beyond the Pines has an impressively complex narrative, although it's billed as a crime movie. It's true that the narrative centers on crime, but the interpersonal relationships and the questions the movie asks about family, life, and justice feel so much bigger than that. In the movie, Ryan Gosling plays Luke Glanton, a motorcyclist who fairly regularly finds himself in a bit of trouble. This ramps up when Luke discovers he has a son with his former fling, Romina (Eva Mendes), and wants to do right by him.
Unfortunately, things spiral beyond what Luke intended, which puts him in a face-to-face, deadly encounter with Bradley Cooper's character, Avery Cross, a rookie cop. The story then fascinatingly trades hands entirely, with Avery becoming the protagonist in place of Luke. In addition to the genuinely creative storytelling, which makes the movie interesting enough, both Bradley Cooper and Ryan Gosling clearly brought their all to these roles, and their stellar performances prove it.

While watching The Place Beyond the Pines, I was truly engrossed in the story because both actors were so believable in their roles. This was particularly impressive given how emotionally demanding each of their parts in this movie are, which even spans well over a decade within the narrative in Cooper's case. This only reinforced to me that this movie is severely underrated, but it's also worth noting what a major point The Place Beyond the Pines was in both of these actors' careers.

Bradley Cooper's 10 Highest-Grossing Movies (Outside The MCU)
One of cinema's highest-grossing movie stars, Cooper has so many box office hits that his work outside the MCU alone puts most actors to shame.
Bradley Cooper's Career Hit A Turning Point With The Place Beyond The Pines
Cooper Has Since Taken On A Number of Serious Roles
As mentioned, Bradley Cooper has long been associated with his performances in comedies, such as The Hangover, Yes Man, The Wedding Crashers, and others. Cooper still has a number of playful roles, including his recent part in If and, arguably, even his role as Rocket in the Guardians of the Galaxy and other Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movies. However, following The Place Beyond the Pines and Silver Linings Playbook, which also came out around this time, Cooper's career took a notable shift toward more roles that were more likely to get the attention of the Academy.

In fact, several of Bradley Cooper's best movies have taken place in this window, among them A Star Is Born, American Hustle, and American Sniper, all of which earned Cooper Oscar nominations for either Best Actor or Best Supporting Actor, in addition to Silver Linings Playbook. Most recently, he has continued this pattern with Maestro. While it isn't as though The Place Beyond the Pines completely reinvented Cooper's career, it does signal a significant and notable shift.
The Place Beyond The Pines Reunited Ryan Gosling With The Director Of One Of His Best Movies
Gosling Reunited With Derek Cianfrance After Blue Valentine
Just as The Place Beyond the Pines marked a significant moment in Bradley Cooper's career, this movie also brought about a major reunion for Ryan Gosling. That is, in The Place Beyond the Pines, Gosling was reunited with Derek Cianfrance, whom he had worked with on Blue Valentine—one of Ryan Gosling's best movies to date. It seems safe to assume Gosling and Cianfrance work well together, given both Blue Valentine and The Place Beyond the Pines saw such stellar acting from Gosling.
Gosling's career has also had significant updates since then, not only with La La Land, which became a smash hit when it was released in 2016, but also with 2023's Barbie, in which Gosling played Ken. In fact, Barbie was the highest-grossing movie of 2023, which just goes to show how massive this role was. While it's clear both Bradley Cooper and Ryan Gosling have had major career updates since this movie was released, it bears repeating that The Place Beyond the Pines is now available to stream on Netflix, and it is wildly underrated.
