School Spirits Season 2's Janet Twist Makes The "Who Killed Maddie" Question More Complicated
Warning: This Article Contains SPOILERS For School Spirits Season 2.
School Spirits season 2 continues to suggest that Maddie's death is anything but clear-cut. Initially, the show was interested in finding out who killed Maddie Nears, with all her close friends playing a suspect at various poins. However, School Spirits' season 1 ending revealed a shocking and mysterious twist: a ghost did it. Even more unsettling, Janet appears to have taken control of Maddie's body and has been working to conceal the truth by framing the janitor with a planted murder weapon.
As School Spirits reveals that Maddie is (sort of) alive, many mysteries arise regarding just what this means for her character. Being that a ghost must look back to cross over, it becomes key that Maddie reunites with Janet and understands what happened to her, and whether it can be reversed. If the new season repeats a shocking ending, School Spirits' cast of characters might be in for a treacherous ride that promises no simple resolutions.
School Spirits Season 2 Confirms Janet's Ghost "Killed" Maddie
Maddie Being In A Vulnerable State Allowed Janet To Possess Her
The new episodes of School Spirits season 2 offer a bigger look into how the tragic possession of Maddie Nears took place and why it was possible. Since Maddie is emotionally devastated after arguing with her mother over the fact that she spent her college savings on a new house, Maddie's body becomes a fragile shell. As Maddie puts it, her mom "killed her spirit." Additionally, it is hinted that this is the reason why Maddie can hear Janet asking for help in the bunker room and sees her and Mr. Martin when she opens the door.
Because of Maddie's vulnerable state, Janet is able to possess her body. She runs and thrusts her spirit inside the poor girl, making Maddie fly backward and hit her head on a pipe, which kills her. Afterward, her detached ghost gets up and flees the scene, not fully grasping she's dead yet. Meanwhile, Janet manages to run away in Maddie's body through a tunnel in the school. A clip from School Spirits season 2's trailer confirms future episodes will delve deeper into Janet's explanation of the events, showing her in Maddie’s bleeding body.
Why Maddie's Death Is Still A Mystery In School Spirits
How Janet Managed To Take Over A Living Body Remains A Mystery
School Spirits season 2 has already put forward many new theories, mainly as it works to answer what happened to Janet by introducing her history and plans. First, it's confirmed that Mr. Martin had kept her trapped for over a year, and lied about her crossing over. On top of being lab partners, the two were romantically involved, increasing the mystery of who was manipulating the other. While it makes sense that Janet wanted to free herself from Mr. Martin, Charley also wonders if maybe their teacher wanted to protect them from her experiments.
As Mr. Martin has hidden in the scar of the school where he died, Maddie and company are struggling to find any answers. However, the papers from the bunker suggest Janet and Mr. Martin were conducting experiments on the ghosts, with Janet's notebook revealing she had taken something important from them. The villains' secret investigation would explain why ghosts can't leave the school, why certain objects don't reset, and how Janet was able to take over a living body. Most importantly, it may be the key to answering if Maddie really died.
Could Ghost Maddie Get Her Body Back & Come Back To Life?
School Spirits Season 2 Teases The Worst Outcome For Maddie
Only three episodes in, School Spirits season 2 is quickly building up to answer whether Maddie can regain possession of her body and life. As Janet has now reunited with Maddie's mom, she will probably be made to go to Split River High again, opening the door for her to be confronted about her actions and made to switch with Maddie. Although it doesn't seem likely, Janet could even be willing to return the body. Whether she knows how to do it is another problem.
Additionally, Janet's experiments involve Rhonda, Charley, Wally, and the rest of the School Spirits. While they've always wanted to cross over, it's uncertain whether this is even possible after what Janet did to them, or if this can be reversed. The School Spirits' cast teased season 2's ending, saying "Think about the worst thing that could happen, and then worse than that." This hints that the supernatural show could still flip the script on its main mystery. Maddie being unable to go back to her body would surely defy genre expectations, but it remains a palpating possibility.
