School Spirits: Who Eugene Bergstrom Is & What He Knows About Janet & Mr. Martin’s Death

Warning: This Article Contains SPOILERS For School Spirits Season 2.

Mr. Martin and Janet's deaths continue to be one of the biggest mysteries of School Spirits, and Eugene Bergstrom might be the one to provide all the answers. Despite some date inconsistencies with season 1, season 2 has established the fire that killed both Janet and her chemistry teacher happened back on April 30, 1958. It seems season 2 is building up to finally showing a complete flashback of the fire, and the latest addition to the School Spirits cast heavily hints there were more people involved in the event.

Paramount's School Spirits has seen a viewership increase as new episodes are released on streaming, proving audiences are getting hooked on the supernatural show's complicated mysteries. As Maddie's death twist in School Spirits sets up a hunting mission after Janet and Mr. Martin, the runaway ghosts' pasts may prove essential to understanding what they were trying to do at Split River High. Notably, Eugene Bergstrom's recent comments suggest there is a larger story behind the fire that killed Janet and Mr. Martin, possibly even having to do with other characters.

Eugene Is Janet's Friend From Highschool Back In The 1950s

Since School Spirits explained Yuri is connected to Janet, season 2 has added another character from her past that may become key to understanding her death and purpose. As Maddie's living friends think of ways to get Janet back to Split River High, Nicole goes on a solo mission to visit a person who went to school with her back in the 1950s. Having found him in a picture with Janet in a yearbook, Nicole visits Eugene Bergstrom at Red Pine Village, the nursing home where he is staying.

School Spirits might be in for a last-minute revelation that changes everything about the show's villains, possibly making them both victims of a third person.

In their meeting, Eugene confirms he was close friends with Janet and still laments her death to this day. When Nicole presses him about the fire, a flashback reveals Janet and Eugene were lab partners in Mr. Martin's chemistry class, and part of the science club. The newspaper about Janet's win at the science fair even shows him at her side, hinting they may have been working together. His reaction to Mr. Martin suggests he may have known something was going on between him and Janet, though it's unclear if he was worried or jealous.

Eugene Hints Someone Else Is Responsible For The Fire That Killed Janet & Mr. Martin

Someone Might Have Wanted To Steal Janet's Scientific Discoveries

School Spirits' biggest unanswered questions about Mr. Martin heavily indicate he is responsible for the fire that killed him and Janet. After all, a newspaper clip confirms that the surviving students blamed their teacher for starting the fire, and Janet's parents also tried to hold the school administration accountable. However, Eugene suggests there is more to the fire than everyone thinks — and School Spirits might be in for a last-minute revelation that changes everything about the show's villains, possibly making them both victims of a third person.

There might be characters from their past that haven't been introduced, like Janet's hinted boyfriend to whom she wrote a corny poem.

When Nicole asks him if their teacher caused the fire, Eugene says neither Janet nor Mr. Martin would have made that mistake, as they were incredibly meticulous. Though this confirms that out of all the School Spirits' deaths, this one wasn’t an accident — and one of them could have started it on purpose — it also opens the chance that someone else is behind the fire. This could be possible especially if someone was trying to steal Janet's discoveries, as her ghost in her scar says "I was robbed."

Who Started The Fire If Not Janet Or Mr Martin?

School Spirits May Be Preparing Another Shocking Twist With Mr Martin And Janet's Deaths

Many characters remain suspects in the fire that killed Janet and Mr. Martin and, as the School Spirits season 2 episodes are released, the mystery gets more complicated. The evil teacher is still the biggest suspect, as he was upset about getting fired and mad at Janet, not to mention, he said it was his fault. However, if he did start the fire, it doesn't make sense that Janet collaborated with him for decades. Considering Janet's big aspirations, it's less likely she did it too, unless her father was taking away her university future.

Like Maddie's death in season 1, Janet and Mr. Martin's tragic demise might be explained with an unforeseen twist at the end of season 2 of School Spirits. Notably, there might be characters from their past that haven't been introduced, like Janet's hinted boyfriend to whom she wrote a corny poem. Though Eugene might be responsible, it's strange that he would tell Nicole that the answers are in his locker in the nursing home. If School Spirits repeats season 1's shocking twist, the mysterious fire could even have supernatural implications, or be connected to an unexpected character.
