Scrubs Revival Gets Promising Progress Update From Creator: "Just Starting To Build It"

The Scrubs revival is moving forward, with creator Bill Lawrence confirming that the writers' room is in development. The original series followed medical interns and doctors at a teaching hospital called Sacred Heart Hospital. Scrubs'cast featured Zach Braff, Donald Faison, and Sarah Chalke, among many others. It originally aired from 2001 to 2010, first on NBC before moving to ABC for its final two seasons. Now, more than ten years later, a Scrubs revival is in the works and aiming to bring back the original cast.

According to Variety, while speaking at the Writers Guild Awards,Lawrence shared that assembling the writing team for the reboot is currently underway. He emphasized that the revival is in its early stages but expressed confidence in its progress. While a timeline for production has not been announced yet, the project is being developed under 20th Television for ABC. Lawrence's full comments are below:

We’re in the process of, the cool thing, putting the writers together. And it’s the best thing in the world to see that some of the most talented writers in the world wrote on that show and they’re all still friends, and my friends. And so [we] have a combination of the old and new. We’re just starting to build it right now. And I expect it to make an appearance very soon.

What This Means For The Scrubs Revival

The Revival Is Looking For A Mix Of Old & New

The Scrubs revival is finally taking concrete steps forward with the formation of a writers’ room, a critical phase in television production. The involvement of returning Scrubs writers suggests an effort to maintain the original series' style, while new voices could introduce a renewed perspective. Additionally, many original Scrubs actors have expressed interest in returning. However, details about the cast and format remain under wraps right now, and Lawrence’s confirmation that the writing process is underway is the most concrete progress reported so far.

Additionally, Lawrence remains under an overall deal at Warner Bros. Television, but Scrubs is being produced by 20th Television, the successor to ABC Studios, which handled the original show. The restructuring of Disney-owned studios allowed for this collaboration. Scrubs is expected to remain under the 20th Television banner despite Lawrence’s primary partnership with Warner Bros., allowing him to return to a project developed under his former studio. While Scrubs season 9 was a short-lived expansion of the franchise, the new revival appears to be a more ambitious effort, with Lawrence assembling a writers’ room versus producing supplemental content.

Bringing Scrubs back with members of its original creative team is an encouraging step, especially given the strong writing that aided the original series' success. Lawrence’s involvement, along with returning writers, increases the likelihood that the show will stay true to its original voice. However, the success of a revival depends on more than just familiarity, and it will need to justify its return with a compelling reason beyond nostalgia. With television's landscape evolving since Scrubs' debut, the writing team will have to balance what made the show work with what audiences expect today.
