Although Severance season 2's episode 1 introduced viewers to many new mysteries, one of the most intriguing questions from the episode revolved around the identity of the man behind Mark. Many viewers could not help but speculate about the identity of the man who briefly appears behind Mark in Severance season 2's opening episode when after Mark enters the abandoned Wellness Center. Since the man seemed eerily similar to Mark in appearance, many viewers even speculated that the mysterious man could be Mark's clone.

The cloning theory does not make sense anymore since the show's creators have already dismissed it. When Adam Scott was asked whether Lumon is involved with cloning in Severance, he said (via EW), "This sounds like what Lumon would be doing in a super boring version of Severance.” While this puts the cloning theory to rest and confirms the man behind Mark was not his clone, it does not explain how the MDR employees' alternate versions or "twins" existed in Severance season 2's episode 4. It also makes it hard not to wonder whether the man behind Mark was his "twin" at Lumon.

By refining information in the Macrodata Refinement department, Mark and his team must unknowingly be using machine learning to make the "twins" more human and capable of effectively working at Lumon.

Many viewers have also speculated that season 2's episode 4 unfolded in a simulation, where the "twins" were a part of the simulated program.

Lumon's long-term goal must be to replace humans with their synthetic counterparts to ensure the company's productivity is not impacted by the flaws and complexities in human emotions. A divisive theory surrounding the "twins" also suggests they were overridden into the MDR workers' consciousness in Severance season 2's episode 4. Many viewers have also speculated that season 2's episode 4 unfolded in a simulation, where the "twins" were a part of the simulated program.
