Sims 4 On Switch 2 Would Be The Best Console Version Yet, & Not Because Its Portable

The Nintendo Switch 2 has built-in motion-control mouse features which would improve playing The Sims 4. The series was always PC-first, with console versions being an afterthought. The native controller input is rather unintuitive, requiring slower movement and strange input combinations. While it was possible to plug in a USB mouse and keyboard into the first Switch, the experience wasn’t always great. Some commands would not work and there could still be lag when using a mouse.

The Switch 2 was only recently announced and details about the Joy-Con mouse haven’t been fully detailed. Some patent images show that the Joy-Cons can be held on their sides, with both of the sticks facing inwards. It is unclear if this will be a simple right or left option, or if both need to be used at the same time. Perhaps Nintendo is waiting for players to get a hands-on Switch 2 demo before they finalize the design.

Switch 2’s Mouse Controls Are Perfect For The Sims

The Sims 4 is a much better experience when using a mouse. This includes a standard mouse or anything that accurately emulates the same smooth movement. Nearly every mode is simply easier to use and becomes more fun in the process.

During Create A Sim in TS4, a mouse allows you to quickly browse between outfits, items, styles, and more recently, swap between occult life states. It is even possible to instantly switch over to other members of the family and see how they compare in fashion and traits. Perhaps two siblings might be like-minded, or be completely contrasting. The use of a mouse allows for simple comparison and editing.

The Sims 4 uses many drop-down menus and lists. This includes moving Sims, adding them to clubs, and making various changes to worlds. Using a mouse makes this so much faster and easier to manage.

Build Mode is another example of where a mouse shines in TS4. It is easier to select items from the bottom menu and drag them to just the right location. Accurately rotating an object is also much easier when using a mouse and keys rather than just a normal Switch Joy-Con.

The Sims 4’s upcoming Businesses & Hobbies expansion pack has fans confused, since it seems to focus a lot more on one aspect than the other.

Finally, Live Mode is the best use of a real or virtual mouse. Sims can move very quickly when playing, even in normal speed mode. It can be a chore to chase them down if they are actively moving, especially ones that have been possessed by the Mother Plant living in StrangerVille, one of The Sims 4's best worlds, or are scared. When playing on a Switch, it can feel like pausing is necessary to keep free-will Sims under control.

Sims 4 Has Never Been Fully At Home On Console

So Many Features Only Work on PC

It is very apparent that EA originally intended TS4 to be on PC, with work on all the console versions being secondary. This is most notable in the Gallery, which is shared on all platforms. Normally, no custom content is ever shown to Switch owners. However, PC players can catfish by using default swaps on their own machines, making their Sims look more impressive than they really are, and uploading inaccurate images of their creations.

It is true that the new Switch 2 controls won’t fix all the issues of TS4, but it will bring it more on par with the PC experience. This will come with most of the same benefits and headaches as that version. However, there is still no full custom content and the annoyances of installing or removing it. Custom content is sometimes the most sought-after aspect of TS4, namely script mods that enhance gameplay beyond EA’s official packs.

There Are Advantages To Going Over To Nintendo

While the PC version of The Sims 4 is the best, it still isn’t perfect. It is the one version that often involves sitting close to a computer screen, sitting in a more ridged posture, and can lead to carpal tunnel issues after long periods. But, the Switch is the ultimate version that allows more relaxation in the physical world. Players can casually play on a television, stretch out on a bed or couch, or even take the game on the go.

The Switch’s portability already existed, but the Switch 2’s integration with a mouse system makes the experience even better. Previously, one would gain comfort but had to sacrifice precision. This could be a small reason why many lots are uploaded without testing - why fix a creation if it is already a pain to make in TS4? But, now players can have a much closer mouse and keyboard feel while sitting in very lazy postures.

While the Switch 2 will be a great new option, it probably isn’t enough to get The Sims 4 players to fully migrate. Packs are not cross-platform, meaning someone would need to buy everything all over again. Additionally, some players absolutely need custom content and long legacy saves. Starting again from scratch would be too rough. For now, the new mouse controls mostly benefit existing original Switch players who will buy the Switch 2.
