Sing Sing Gets Streaming Release Date After Securing Three Oscar Nominations, Including Best Actor
The streaming release date for A24's Oscar-nominated Sing Singhas been revealed. The movie, based on a true story, follows Divine G (Colman Domingo), a man who is incarcerated and trying to prove his innocence for a crime he didn't commit. In the meantime, he finds purpose in an acting group, warily welcoming a newcomer (Clarence Maclin). Sing Sing has a stellar 97% Rotten Tomatoes score from critics and audience members, recently earning three Oscar nominations for Best Original Song, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Actor for Domingo.
Warner Bros. Discovery has announced thatSing Sing will join Max's catalog of A24 films on March 21. This release date means that the film will only be available to stream on Max after the Oscars, which will take place on March 2. It will debut on HBO's linear channel on March 22 at 8pm ET.
What This Means For Sing Sing
The Oscars Could Boost Sing Sing's Streaming Numbers
While an argument could be made that releasing Sing Sing on Max before the Oscars' ceremony would have worked better, its March 21 debut on Max could produce stronger streaming numbers. The film was released by A24 on July 12, 2024, and then received a wider release after initially being delayed. The movie is currently available digitally on demand for $24.99, but its release on Max will provide a cost-effective option for patient subscribers. With the Oscars less than a month away, its nominations could garner good word of mouth and entice viewers to see Sing Sing once it's available on Max.
Our Take On The Streaming Release Date For Sing Sing
It Should Have Come Sooner
Sing Sing's shifting widerrelease dates were somewhat baffling. Looking at how it lines up with distributor A24's award season campaign, however, clears up some confusion, as the wider release effectively garnered attention for the film during the midst of awards season. Now that the Oscars are around the corner, I would have preferred for Sing Sing to come out on Max before the ceremony, which could've garnered more attention and inspired viewers to root for it.
Considering Domingo's raw and heartbreaking performance, and Sing Sing's striking subject matter, the film could have garnered sufficient attention for the awards season and, thus, more support. The ending lingers with viewers in the best way, and, directly after seeing it, I wanted as many people as possible to watch it and discuss its compelling themes. While I can see the logic behind lining up its wider theatrical run and streaming release with its awards campaign, I think Sing Sing was strong enough to perform well on its own merit.
