Biologists typically have no shortage of volunteers for their long-running bald eagle population surveys at six California lakes (four in the San Bernardino National Forest and two in state parks). The birders report strong emotional connections to the eagles, which have come back from the brink of extinction to number about 1,000 breeding pairs statewide.
