Solo Leveling Season 2 Will Make the Jeju Island Arc Even Better Thanks to a Small Manhwa Change

Warning: SPOILERS for Episode #7 of Solo Leveling Season 2

While Solo Levelingwas already a highly regarded web novel and manhwa, its anime adaptation has presented an exciting and renewed experience even for fans who have read the source material. With small changes and additions, not only did Solo Leveling Season 2 strive to improve Jinwoo’s character, but the anime also took the foundations of the manhwa and enhanced them to deepen the world of the series as well as the relationships between the characters. This becomes noticeable with a subtle detail in Solo Leveling Season 2, Episode #7, which proves the anime is changing the upcoming Jeju Island Arc for the better.

The adaptation has been increasing the expectations of viewers by teasing the upcoming arc since the first season, and now with only a couple of episodes before the start of the Jeju Island Raid Solo Leveling Season 2 episode, 7 includes the first glimpse into the monsters that the S-Rank hunters will have to face, in a scene that lives up to the feeling of the manhwa and surpasses fans' expectations.

The Ants From the Jeju Island Raid Look Better in the Anime Than in the Manhwa

The Anime Perfectly Builds Up Solo Leveling’s Most Awaited Arc

In Solo Leveling Season 2, episode 7, the winged foot-soldier ant is introduced in the anime, reaching land on a small island and appearing in front of two hunters. Even though a scene in Solo Leveling chapter #81 where the two hunters talk about the implications of a gate appearing since it’s a remote island was cut from the adaptation, the scene of the ant coldly gazing at the hunters was improved in the anime. While the ants were already revealed to be threatening, their design in the manhwa isn’t that intimidating.

However, in the latest Solo Leveling episode, the Ant has a better character design than the ones who appeared in the original scenes in season 1, with a more menacing presence and a terrifying expression that leaves no place for doubt that it is hostile, and it’s targeting the hunters.

Solo Leveling is, undoubtedly, one of the best current anime, but some of the changes the anime makes from the manhwa are better than others.

The anime also modified the scene of the ant arriving at the island's coast and instead added a cinematic cut of the moon behind Jinwoo, which slowly faded to show the ant flying. This builds up more tension surrounding the ants, adding a dangerous atmosphere to them and confirming the anime is improving even small details, hinting that the most anticipated scenes to come will strike even harder once animated.

The Jeju Island Arc, which starts in Solo Leveling chapter #90, was the one that fans longed to watch animated the most, as it's considered one of the highest points in the story. Because of this, it's only natural that Solo Leveling Season 2's production team chose to introduce original content to deepen the relationships of characters ahead of their participation in the Jeju Raid.

These original scenes give more context and also highlight the S-Rank hunters, providing more opportunities for viewers to understand their different personalities before the battle in Jeju. This way, given that Studio A-1 Pictures’s highest priority is delivering a high-quality animation in the next arc and considering the standout fight of this season so far, Jinwoo against Kargalgan, the anime just set up a high standard for the Battle on Jeju Island, giving fans more reasons to look forward to the upcoming episodes.

Even though some might consider Solo Leveling a generic power fantasy focused on Jinwoo, one of the most striking aspects of the story is how it features international conflicts and political intrigue surrounding the hunter’s role in society. The series' worldbuilding starts expanding from the beginning of the Jeju Island Arc which was censored during the manhwa run to appeal to the Japanese public, so it raises the question of how the anime will handle this arc in the international version of Solo Leveling Season 2.

Studio A-1 Pictures has set out to do a faithful adaptation and justice to Solo Leveling’s story centered on things that can only be expressed through animation, which was a difficult task as it's considered the manhwa with the most dynamic and detailed art due to its talented illustrator, Dubu. Nonetheless, the series' biggest charm has always been its enjoyable and visually striking battle scenes, so viewers should prepare for some mind-blowing animation in the following episodes of Solo Leveling Season 2.
