Sonic 3 Crosses Important Box Office Milestone To Break Huge Franchise Record

Sonic the Hedgehog 3's box office has made its way past a major franchise record. Released on December 20, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is about to enter its fourth weekend in theaters. Sonic 3 faced some pretty formidable competition, including Mufasa: The Lion King, which was released on the same day, as well as returning box office competitorsWicked and Moana 2. Sonic 3 has held its own for the most part, consistently making it into the box office top 5.

Per BoxOfficeMojo, Sonic the Hedgehog 3's box office this week has made it break a major franchise record. The threequel is now the highest-grossing movie in the Sonic franchise at the domestic box office. At the time of writing, its total is $192.4 million, passing Sonic the Hedgehog 2's $190.8 million gross. The first Sonic movie brought in a significantly-lower $148.9 million at the domestic box office.

What This Means For Sonic the Hedgehog 3

Sonic 3 Still Has To Beat The Worldwide Record

Though it has passed the domestic record, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 still has a long way to go before it will beat the franchise's worldwide record. Its $341.2 million gross has allowed it to pass Sonic the Hedgehog's $319.7 million worldwide grab, but still falls short of Sonic 2's $405.4 million haul. With still over $60 million to go, Sonic 3 will have to maintain its box office momentum if it wishes to become the highest-grossing Sonic film worldwide.

This should not be impossible to do as Sonic 3 faces January. This month is notoriously slow for theatrical releases, and this year's slate is no exception. This year is particularly slow in terms of kids' movies, as Sonic 3's most major competition does not come until the January 31 release of Dog Man. As such, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will have time left in theaters to be one of the main family movies, especially as the Moana 2 craze should finally slow down in the coming weeks.

Our Take On The Sonic The Hedgehog 3 Record

This Is Good For The Franchise's Future

Sonic the Hedgehog 3's most recent record is great news for the health of the franchise. Already, the threequel is the best-reviewed movie in the series, and it is optimistic that this acclaim has, this time, equated to an increase in viewership. Sonic the Hedgehog 4 has been confirmed to be in development, and the more people see Sonic 3, the better the movie's existing base will be. The next couple of weekends will determine whether Sonic the Hedgehog 3 can become the worldwide highest-grosser in the franchise.
