Spider-Man Meets D&D: Marvel Just Set Up Our Favorite Hero Squad in Ages

Warning: Contains spoilers for What If...? Galactus Transformed Spider-Gwen #1!!

Spider-Gwen is dipping her toe into cosmic power as Galactus' newest herald, yet somehow her surprising new crew is poised to steal the show. A band of adventurers who appear to be plucked straight out of a Dungeons & Dragonscampaign join Gwen in her dragon-fighting efforts and are gearing up to help her face her new boss. It is a sci-fi and fantasy combination that only Spider-Gwen could pull off.

In What If…? Galactus Transformed Spider-Gwen #1 – written by Kalinda Vazquez, with art by Daniel Picciotto – Spider-Gwen volunteers to become Galactus' next herald, to protect the remaining Ethereals from being destroyed. It sets her on a path across the universe to find the Devourer's next meal, and lands her on a planet with fire-breathing dragons, warriors, and wizards.

Spider-Gwen's time as Galactus' herald is technically voluntary, but it's clear that she's never been on good terms with her job of scouting out worlds to be consumed. The moment she stumbles upon a planet brimming with life, she begins mounting her defense. It just so happens that the planet is home to every classic fantasy trope around, including kind warriors eager to help her on her quest - not just to save their planet, but because they seem to adhere to the same code Gwen follows herself. It's the start of every good adventure, even if this one is short-lived.

Spider-Gwen's new allies are turning her fight against Galactus into a compelling Dungeons & Dragons quest, and plenty of fans will want more.

Erebin, who is pointedly similar to Gwen in both attitude and motivation, leads a group of three other adventurers: Zovia, Oinran, and Pamlum. They sport a medley of colorful skin, pointed ears, and speech patterns anyone familiar with D&D (and fantasy stories in general) will recognize. Spider-Gwen catches on quickly enough to ask if there are any wizards around for the "epic level of help" they need to fight Galactus, and is guided to none other than the Sorcerer Supreme, another "modern" stowaway and the magic user to complete their party. It's the perfect setup, and Erebin and his crew effortlessly fit in.

Spider-Gwen is no stranger to hopping around different universes, but some ideas are too good to leave behind after a single issue – including Erebin and his fellow fighters. Gwen already has a great deal in common with them, and in a single issue, the group demonstrates humor, skill, and compassion, making them excellent candidates for future appearances. In all likelihood, they'll never leave the pages of a What If...?, but they deserve a longer journey with the webslinger. Spider-Gwen's new allies are turning her fight against Galactus into a compelling Dungeons & Dragons quest, and plenty of fans will want more.

What If...? Galactus Transformed Spider-Gwen #1 is available now from Marvel Comics.
