Spider-Man: No Way Home And Venom: The Last Dance Actor Addresses Working With Tom Hardy And His Possible Marvel Movie Future
After a brief cameo as a bartender in Spider-Man: No Way Home, actor Cristo Fernandez was speculated to have a broader tie into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, the Ted Lasso star has yet to reappear in the franchise, instead making his next appearance in Sony's Venom: The Last Dance. In that film, his role was minor.
Recently, Fernandez discussed his role in an interview with Screen Rant's Tessa Smith, clarifying that the bartenders he played in these Marvel films were not the same character. Referring to appearing in Venom: The Last Dance, Fernandez expressed his gratitude to director Kelly Marcel "and everyone in that universe, in the production." The actor revealed that working with Venom lead Tom Hardy "was a dream come true." He then added that having "the opportunity to say hola to my friend [and Ted Lasso costar] Juno Temple at the premieres" was a bonus.
Speaking more broadly, Fernandez expressed his enthusiasm for being "part of these universes," quipping: "I hope the barman becomes a super barman and makes super cocktails and super margaritas." The star also explained how he appreciated being given the chance to be a part of major franchises: "As a Mexican, as a Latino, it's an honor to be considered in these worlds and these universes and have my name next to the people I admire."
He compared the feeling to his other recent appearance in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, which saw "[his] name next to Keanu Reeves, to Idris Elba, to Jim Carrey." Fernandez hoped his success would inspire others by showing "that it's possible to have these crazy dreams and fulfill them." As for his future with Marvel, the actor noted that the symbiote almost touched his character, saying: "I saw that and I didn't know. [...] That's why I am just praying every day, Dios mio, por favor, make the barman, Super Barman."
What Cristo Fernández's Marvel Movie Comments Mean
Fernandez's cameo may not have amounted to much when compared to the original tease of him being in the MCU, and after a brief role in Venom: The Last Dance, he has no further appearances lined up for that franchise or for Sony. However, the actor's comments make his willingness to return apparent.
Fernandez's bartender also appeared in the post-credit scene for Venom: The Last Dance, setting up a potential future in the Sony Marvel films; however, no further entries in that franchise have been announced.
After all, the tease is there: the MCU variant of his character was left with a part of the symbiote. He could very well return to the franchise as a new version of the Venom character, and it would be in line with the story that Spider-Man: No Way Home set up.
Our Take On Christo Fernández's Marvel Movie Comments
While Fernandez's appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home was likely meant to be a fun one-off given its comedic nature, the promise of Fernandez joining the MCU is hard to ignore. The actor is very popular from his time on Ted Lasso, and he would be an asset to Marvel. Additionally, the bartender was given some minor characterization, with his family having disappeared during the Blip, which could lend itself to an interesting motive.
Moreover, with the Venom franchise ending and a fourth MCU Spider-Man film on the way, Sony may be looking to bring a new version of the character to the big screen. If so, Fernandez's enthusiasm and previous appearance could make him an ideal actor for the role.
