Spy x Family: How a Huge Plot Twist Proves We Were Wrong About Its Big Villain
Warning: SPOILERS for Spy x Family chapter #110
The target of Loid Forger in Spy x Family, Donovan Desmond, is considered the main villain in the series, but also one of the most intriguing characters, since everything about him is shrouded in mystery. The Desmond family dynamic is also quite peculiar, as shown in Spy x Family chapter #106, where they don’t even talk to each other during dinner. However, in Spy x Family's latest chapter, Melinda Desmond just unveiled a piece of intel that shocked Loid and fans alike.
Even though the chairman of the National Unity Party of Ostania was shown to be a strange man, expressionless and detached from his family, Melinda’s statement to Loid in Spy x Family chapter #110 revealed that Donovan Desmond’s odd demeanor wasn’t related to him being an alien but because she thinks that he can read minds, just like Anya. However, this hints that Donovan Desmond might not be who fans think.
Donovan Desmond’s Revelation Hints that He Might Not Be Spy x Family’s Main Villain
Ostania’s National Unity Party Chairman Already Knows Loid is a Spy
The revelation in Spy x Family chapter #110 that Chairman Desmond can read minds means that Loid’s real identity as Twilight has already been blown up since he was thinking about finding out Donovan’s secrets and plans for the war during their meeting in chapter #37. However, the fact that Donovan didn’t accuse Loid with the State Security Service could mean that he purposely held back because he lacked evidence, didn’t want to reveal that he could read minds, or means that he isn’t in favor of the war at all, so he doesn’t see Loid as a threat.
Likewise, during his encounter with Loid and in Mr. Henderson’s flashback in chapter #99, Donovan doesn’t speak in favor of war and just wants people to reveal their secrets, since he believes there is no other way to understand each other. This would explain Donovan’s involvement in mind-reading experimentation, but the story has yet to show him plotting to perpetuate conflict between countries. While there’s always the possibility that Donovan can’t read minds, he could have been a red herring all this time, with the main villain of the story being another character conspiring in the shadows.
There Is Another Explanation of Donovan Desmond’s "Mind Reading"
Both Donovan and Demetrius Could Share The Same Habit
Even though Demetrius's lack of thought and Melinda's terror of her husband is now believed to be due to their fear of him reading their minds after Spy x Family's latest chapter, an earlier statement might hint at another reason behind the disengaged state of Donovan and his son.
Instead of Donovan Desmond turning his son into a mindless pawn during the time they used to spend together, he could have been teaching him how to shut his brain. In Spy x Family chapter #39, when Damian goes camping with his friends, the teacher in charge of guiding them talks about the benefits of “shutting down the brain”, claiming that recent neuroscience studies believed the brain becomes more active when the mind is disengaged.
While this is a weird theory to tell 6-year-old children, it could explain Demetrius's academy excellence and behavior, since it could be due to the influence of his father, since he stays disengaged even when Donovan isn’t around, and he thought something similar to him when Anya read his mind. Nevertheless, it's also possible that Donovan Desmond’s mind reading is just a delusion from Melinda, or she is trying to fool Loid, so fans should await to read what Spy x Family's story might reveal next.
