Star Trek Is Ready to Break Bad With One of Starfleet's Heroes, Teasing Their "Worst Day" Ever

Star Trek is about to break bad with one of Starfleet’s heroes, teasing their “worst day ever.” Lieutenant Shaxs of Star Trek: Lower Decks is noted for his deep-seated hatred of fascism, and in the forthcoming Star Trek: Lore War: Shaxs’ Worst Day, he becomes that which he despises the most. The book is a sequel to the Eisner-nominated Star Trek: Day of Blood: Shaxs’ Best Day.

ComicBook announced Star Trek: Lore War: Shaxs’ Worst Day, which will be published by IDW and will reunite the Shaxs’ Best Day team of writer Ryan North and artist Derek Charm. A spin-off of the forthcoming Lore War, the solicitation for the one-shot reads as follows:

From the team who brought you the Ringo- and Eisner-nominated Shaxs’ Best Day comes a rip-roaring ride full of clever ship high jinks, nonstop badassery, and bombastic punches…because at the end of the day, let’s face it. It’s not Shaxs’ worst day. It’s fascism’s.

Shaxs had his best day, but now that the universe has been rewritten by the mad android Lore, he’s about to have his worst. Starfleet has been distorted into a machinery of oppression antithetical to everything it once stood for, and Shaxs has been made into the one thing he despises most in the universe: a fascist.

Now free of Lore’s hold over his mind, it’s up to Shaxs to revert everyone in Starfleet back to their old selves and save the cosmos.

IDW also shared advanced artfrom the one-shot, including three variant covers, shared below.

The Bajoran Shaxs, the tactical officer of the USS Cerritos, may be best known for his over-the-top tendencies and desire to continually eject the warp core. Yet underneath this is a tender heart who very much despises fascism in all of its forms. His hatred of it stems from growing up on Bajor during the Cardassian Occupation. During this dark period, the Cardassians created a brutal regime on the planet, giving birth to an underground network of freedom fighters. Shaxs and Deep Space Nine’s Colonel Kira were two members of this underground movement.

Shaxs played a large role in Day of Blood, the previous Star Trek comics crossover. In the second storyline, “The Red Path,” Shaxs temporarily joins Captain Sisko on the USS Theseus. Kahless, who was slaughtering the gods, had obtained a Bajoran Orb, and Shaxs was brought in to help retrieve it. Shaxs saw action during the Klingon uprising Kahless instigated, and was crucial in helping restore control to the planet. The one-shot Shaxs’ Best Day, set during the uprising, saw him take on a horde of Klingons, fighting them all off single-handedly.

Shaxs’ Best Day was violent and brutal, as he fought his way through throngs of fanatical Klingons. Kahless was preaching a fascist message, and Shaxs, who famously declared “fighting fascism is a full-time job”, rose up to help stop it. The fight scenes in Shaxs’ Best Day were largely played for (dark) laughs: Shaxs used a bat’leth like a boomerang and even fought a Klingon mecha. Audiences and critics responded well to Shaxs’ Best Day, and the book was even nominated for an Eisner for Best One-Shot.

Now, the creative team behind Shaxs’ Best Day have reunited for the character’s worst day. In the new Star Trek universe Lore has created, Shaxs is a fascist under the android’s thumb. When he “wakes” up and realizes what has happened, he will be unbelievably angry. Shaxs has made a career out of fighting fascism, and Lore has made him just that. He will have to once again fight his way through a group of fascists, but this time he will be trying to awaken them to the truth of their situation.

Star Trek: Lore War: Shaxs' Worst Day is on sale May 28 from IDW Publishing.
