Star Wars Finally Showing Kylo Ren's Birth Makes His Fall To The Dark Side Even More Heartbreaking

Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Star Wars: Battle of Jakku - Last Stand #4

Star Wars has finally shown the day of Ben Solo's birth, making his fall to the dark side as Kylo Ren even more heartbreaking. The son of Leia Organa and Han Solo, Ben Solo was corrupted to the dark side by Supreme Leader Snoke of the First Order (a puppet for Palpatine himself). Eventually becoming Supreme Leader in his own right, it's absolutely tragic to see just how much the galaxy once believed Ben was a new hope at the dawn of a new era in the Star Wars timeline.

At the end of Marvel's 12-issue Battle of Jakku series by Alex Segura, Jethro Morales, and Jim Campbell, Last Stand #4 shows the Empire's surrender to the New Republic, marking the official end of the Galactic Civil War. However, various Imperial remnants were still scattered across the Outer Rim. Nevertheless, this was also the same day Leia gave birth to Ben Solo. Now, Star Wars is finally showing how the galaxy and its heroes reacted to Ben Solo's birth, and the new insights provided by this new and canonical issue make his future fall to the dark side so much worse.

Star Wars New Battle of Jakku Series Ends With Ben Solo's Birth

The New Narration Is BRUTAL

Birth of Ben Solo in Jakku Last Stand #4

Shown surrounded by his family in the aftermath of the Battle of Jakku, the issue's narration confirms that Ben Solo's birth was a joyous occasion. This was especially due to the auspicious date coinciding with the end of the Galactic Civil War that had lasted for five years:

"The birth of Ben Solo, the son of Leia Organa and Han Solo, seemed to sound out across the galaxy -- a powerful echo to the new era of peace. And an affirmation that the dark days were over -- and would not return..."

It makes perfect sense that Ben Solo's birth generated so much happiness across the galaxy. He was effectively a living symbol of the peace that had long been fought for and a brighter future with the Empire's defeat.

Ben Solo was the product of a powerful family legacy, one that had been at the forefront of the conflict against the forces that had long oppressed the galaxy. While the date of Ben's birth was previously established in the canon before this new issue, the new narration and actually getting to see baby Ben with his hopeful family definitely makes his dark side fall so much worse. The knowledge that Ben once widely served as a sign that the darkness wouldn't return to the galaxy is brutal considering his future as Kylo Ren.

Ben Solo Was Meant To Be A Shining Jedi Hero For The Next Generation

For quite some time, Ben Solo strove to live up to the expectations that emerged from the day he was born in the Star Wars galaxy. Displaying a powerful connection to the Force just like his mother and uncle, Luke Skywalker eventually took Ben on as his apprentice by the time he was 10 years old. Together, the master and apprentice traveled the galaxy training and searching for ancient Jedi artifacts and temples, all while growing Luke's Jedi academy on Ossus.

However, seeds of the dark side started taking root within Ben Solo, planted by Palpatine via his influence over Snoke as a proxy. Presenting himself as a friend, Snoke became a secret mentor whom Ben confided in more and more. This was especially true following the reveal that Darth Vader was Ben's grandfather.

The truth about Darth Vader was something Luke and Leia had yet to share with Ben, and a political attack against Leia using the privileged information meant the young Jedi apprentice learned the dark truth about his family legacy along with the rest of the galaxy. As such, Ben felt bitter and felt betrayed, turning away from what he once represented from the day of his birth (which Snoke took advantage of).

Palpatine Used Legacy Against Ben Solo, Turning Him Into Kylo Ren

The Dark Days Returned

Snoke effectively turned the young Jedi against his family's legacy in the light and had him focus on the dark with his grandfather. This put Ben Solo on a major precipice between the light and the dark side of the Force ahead of the sequel trilogy. As a result, Luke coming to fear his nephew's potential for darkness so much that he briefly considered killing him is exactly what tipped Ben over the edge, beginning his rise as Kylo Ren as was seen in The Last Jedi's flashbacks.

Without a doubt, the page of Last Stand #4 showing Ben Solo's birth is very much one of dark foreboding rather than true hope. After all, the dark days did return with the emergence of Snoke's First Order and Kylo Ren who'd eventually become Supreme Leader after killing Snokeat the end of The Last Jedi. However, it's still worth noting that Ben Solo did redeem himself by the end of Rise of Skywalker, just like his grandfather ultimately did in the Star Wars canon.
