Star Wars: The Acolyte May Be Canceled, But Its Heroes Will Live On

Despite its controversy, Star Wars: The Acolyte introduced several interesting and captivating characters to the Star Wars universe. These characters added a fresh and compelling element to the narrative, even if they deviated from fans’ traditional expectations. While some of these characters may not return to the small screen, they have found a place in the space opera’s comic book franchise.

In celebration of Black History Month — observed every February in the United Staes — select titles from Marvel Comics’ Star Wars line will feature variant covers highlighting Black heroes from the Star Wars universe. This initiative includes characters from The Acolyte series, such as the twin protagonists/villains Osha and Mae, as well as their mother and coven leader, Mother Aniseya.

Osha and Mae will appear on a variant cover of Star Wars: The High Republic – Fear of the Jedi #1 by Mateus Manhanini, while Mother Aniseya will be featured on a variant cover of Star Wars: Legacy of Vader#1 by Karen S. Darboe. These covers also mark the ten-year anniversary of the Star Wars comic franchise's return to Marvel Comics.

Both artists are renowned for their dazzling cover art, which leaps off the page. This trend continues with these two stunning covers. Fans familiar with The Acolyte will instantly recognize the characters' vibes, captured with remarkable accuracy by the artists. While opinions about Osha and Mae - the two extremely powerful Force users whose bond threatened the Jedi Order - were divided, one aspect everyone agreed on was the excitement of their fight scenes. Manhanini perfectly captures that electrifying energy, and Darboe masterfully conveys the mystery and awe inspired by Mother Aniseya in the series.

Although details about the characters are limited to their appearances on variant covers, the cancelation of the show makes it improbable that fans will see them explored in detail on screen. Therefore, the Star Wars comic book franchise could be an ideal medium to further develop their stories, along with those of other characters from the series.

Indeed, although Mother Aniseya died in the show, it would be interesting to shed more light on her background and that of the coven, particularly regarding their known ability to create life through the Force. On the other hand, Osha and Mae’s story is just beginning, and there's ample room for expansion of what The Acolyte started, especially in terms of how their existence may have influenced the Sith in the Star Wars Skywalker Saga.

Star Wars: Legacy of Vader #1 is available February 5th, 2025, and Star Wars: The High Republic - Fear of the Jedi #1 is available February 19th, 2025, both from Marvel Comics.
