Stardew Valley: 10 Best Crops To Grow In Spring

The farming sim Stardew Valley has been around for quite some time but still captures the hearts of both new and seasoned players. Despite being an almost nine-year-old game, Stardew Valley continues to be one of the best farming sims, with a loyal and dedicated fanbase. The cozy farming sim has much to do, but the main focus is rebuilding a rundown farm inherited from Grandpa.

Farming in Stardew Valley is rewarding in more ways than one. Farming allows players to complete certain quests, fulfill wishes from the townsfolk, make meals with special perks, and sell crops for profit. Not all crops are the same—some are bought from Pierre's, and others are purchased elsewhere. Some are affordable, and some are more expensive. Some take a few days to produce, while others take a week. Some can grow in summer and others in spring, fall, or winter. Players start in spring in Stardew Valley, so here are the top 10 crops to grow in spring.

10 Tulip Seeds Grow Into A Beautiful Flower

Tulips Have A Chance Of Producing Five Colors

Tulips are flowers that grow from tulip bulbs. While they won't bring in a good profit, they do have other uses. They're aesthetically pleasing and can bloom in five different colors. They also make great gifts, especially for Evelyn.

Only Clint, George, and Sebastian dislike receiving tulips as gifts. However, tulips can also be consumed for energy and health. When consumed, they restore 45 energy.

Since tulip bulbs are relatively cheap and only take six days to grow, keeping tulips on hand can be helpful when starting your adventure in Stardew Valley. Tulips are also a donation option in the Garden Bundle in the Community Center. While not used in recipes or quests, tulips can be used in tailoring.

9 Carrots Are A Great, Healthy Snack Option

Keep Carrots On Hand To Restore Energy And Health

Carrot Seeds are one of the crops that can't be purchased from Pierre's, or even from JojaMart or the Traveling Cart. Instead, carrot seeds must be found or obtained through quests or trade. Carrot seeds can easily be found by digging up seed spots, using the Seed Maker, or in the caverns when breaking open crates and barrels. The Prize Machine in Mayor Lewis's House also produces Carrot Seeds; you can find them at the Raccoon Wife's Shop.

Since Carrot Seeds can't be purchased in Stardew Valley, selling mature carrots is pure profit. However, carrots have other uses, too. Carrots may appear as an option in the remixed Spring Crops Bundle in the Community Center. They can also be gifted to most villagers, minus Abigail, Haley, Jas, Sam, and Vincent. Plus, they make a nice snack—restoring 75 energy and 33 health. Carrots can be used in tailoring and can now even be used to feed your horse.

8 Unmilled Rice Can Turn Into A Great Side Dish

Unmilled Rice is a vegetable crop that matures from Rice Shoots purchased from Pierre's General Store in Stardew Valley. They typically take eight days to mature but can mature within six when planted near a water source. If you choose a farm map layout with plenty of water sources, then planting unmilled rice is an excellent option for early-season planting without the need for sprinklers.

Like other crop seeds, Rice Shoot can also be purchased at The Traveling Cart but for a heftier price tag.

Unmilled rice only restores three energy and one health, so it's not the best snack to keep on hand. It's also not a well-liked gift for any of the villagers, nor is it used in any bundles at the Community Center. Still, unmilled rice does have a few good uses.

One of the best uses for unmilled rice is to put it in a Mill and turn it into Rice. This process takes a day. The rice can then be sold for 100g, consumed for more energy and health, or used in other recipes. Unmilled rice can also be used for tailoring and random quests at the Help Wanted board outside Pierre's General Store.

7 Green Beans Are A Great Starter Crop

Be Careful Where You Place Them, Though

The nice thing about Green Beans is that this vegetable crop continues to produce vegetables after maturity. So, instead of just harvesting once, like with previous crops, you'll be able to harvest every three days continuously. For that reason, green beans are one of the best crops to start with, especially since they are also pretty affordable.

Green beans grow on a trellis, which means you won't be able to walk through the tiles where they are planted. Plan accordingly.

Green beans mature from the bean starter, which can be purchased from Pierre's General Store. Though it takes them 10 days to reach maturity, the ongoing supply afterward makes it well worth it. To make the most of this crop, it's recommended to begin planting on the first day of spring.

Green beans can be gifted to various villagers. They're also used in the Spring Crops bundle in Stardew Valley's Community Center and have a chance of appearing as a gold quality in the remixed Quality Crops Bundle. They can be used in recipes, tailoring, and quests, so they're a good crop to plant overall.

6 Potatoes Are An Affordable Choice

Potatoes Have A Chance To Produce Extra When Harvested

Potatoes are another easily accessible vegetable crop early on. Bought from Pierre's General Store as Potato Seeds at 50g, they take just six days to reach maturity and then have a chance to produce extra potatoes when harvested.

Use potatoes as gifts or in the Community Center bundles Spring Crops Bundle or remixed Quality Crops Bundle. The latter is a chance, though, where five gold-quality potatoes may be an option as one of the donations. Potatoes can also be used in tailoring, quests, and the hashbrown recipe.

5 Cauliflower Can Become A Giant Crop

Giant Crops Can Produce More At Harvest

Cauliflower is a great crop to grow in the spring. It has a chance to grow into a giant crop. When harvested, giant crops produce more than the normal amount it took to grow them.

Other than that, giant crops look pretty cool left unharvested on a farm, and better yet, they don't die when seasons change. You can leave them there for pure aesthetics. It takes nine seeds to produce a giant crop, and it must be planted in a 3x3 grid.

Aside from the chance of turning into a giant crop, cauliflower serves quite a few purposes. Maru loves receiving cauliflower as gifts, and Jodi will request a quest. They may also be requested randomly on Pierre's Help Wanted board, which is used in tailoring and the cheese cauliflower recipe. Finally, they're yet another crop required at the Community Center Spring Crops Bundle, with a chance to appear in the remixed Quality Crops Bundle.

4 Rhubarb Is Harder To Get, But Worth It

Rhubarb is not so easily accessible at the start of the game. It requires some time and effort to get the rhubarb seeds needed to grow, but it's worth the wait. Rhubarb seeds are usually purchased from the Oasis or found in Skull Cavern, but they can sometimes be found in the Traveling Cart as well. There's also a slight chance that rhubarb can grow from mixed seeds when planted on Ginger Island.

3 Coffee Beans Can Be Made Into Coffee

Coffee Is A Great Source Of Energy

Coffee Beansare a dual-season crop that can grow and produce in both spring and summer. That means planting these seeds early in spring will yield the most harvests, especially when you consider that they continue to produce every two days once they have matured.

The downside here is that it does take coffee beans 10 days to reach maturity, and they aren't easily accessible as they are only obtained through the Dust Sprite enemy in the mines and occasionally from the Traveling Cart.

Still, if you're lucky enough to get the seeds, each plant will produce four beans at a time, with a slight chance of producing even more. Five beans can then be placed into a Keg and turned into coffee, which can be consumed for energy or sold for profit. Coffee beans can also be used in tailoring and can be requested from the Blobfish when kept in the fishpond.

2 Strawberries Are One Of The Best Crops

Strawberry Seeds Are Available At The Egg Festival

Strawberries are arguably one of the most valuable crops to plant in Stardew Valley. Unfortunately, you won't be planting them until at least your second year, as strawberry seeds are only available at the Egg and Desert festivals. Since these festivals take place in late spring, it's recommended that you save money to purchase the seeds and stockpile for the following spring.

Plant strawberries in your greenhouse once restored to keep your strawberry supply plentiful throughout all seasons.

Strawberries take eight days to mature but then continue to yield fresh fruit every four days. Strawberries make a great gift, especially for Demetrius and Maru, and can be used in tailoring or in preserve jars and kegs. Of course, they can also be sold for 120g, but the profit isn't the greatest when purchased for 100g at the Egg Festival.

The best course of action with strawberries is to turn them into artisan goods through preserve jars and kegs, which can turn the profits into 290g, 360g, and 925g, depending on what you produce with your strawberries.

1 Ancient Fruit Can Be Grown Almost All Year

Grow This Crop All Year Except In Winter

The best spring crop you can grow in Stardew Valley is the Ancient Fruit. This crop is another multi-season crop but grows in three seasons, not just two. It grows in spring, summer, and fall and continues to produce every seven days after maturity. That means if you plant an ancient seed in spring, you'll yield its fruit until the first day of winter.

Of course, it does take 28 days to mature. It's not sold at any of the usual stores. Instead, you'll receive them as rewards from the seed maker and through crafting. Ancient fruit isn't used in recipes or quests, but it can be used in tailoring, when making artisan goods, and when donated to the museum and donated to the Community Center as an option for the Rare Crops Bundles. It also has a chance of appearing in The Missing Bundle in JojaMart.

Crops have various uses in Stardew Valley, from aesthetics to gift giving, recipes, crafting, quests, donations, and profits. These 10 crops are some of the most valuable crops you can plant in the spring, yielding good profits and providing useful resources as you build, grow, and rebuild your grandpa's farm.
