Supernatural Foreshadowed Jared Padalecki's Next Role A Decade Before He Was In It

For 15 seasons, Jared Padalecki portrayed Sam Winchester on Supernatural,and oddly enough, the paranormal drama series predicted the next role the actor would take on. Originally airing on The CW, Supernatural tells the story of Sam and Dean Winchester, two brothers who are hunters, dedicated to taking down the monsters of the world. Considering how long Supernatural lasted, it's no surprise that the actors became synonymous with their characters. However, since Supernatural's 2020 ending, Padalecki and his co-star Jensen Ackles have taken on new TV parts.

While Ackles has appeared in series like The Boys following the conclusion of Supernatural, Padalecki has remained with The CW, starring in their Western reboot, Walker. Running from 1993 to 2001, Walker, Texas Ranger starred Chuck Norris as Texas Ranger Cordell Walker, who uses his martial-arts skills to take down bad guys, alongside his pals, C.D. Parker, James Trivette and A.D.A. Alex Cahill. The reboot, first released in 2021, stars Padalecki as the titular character, and aired for four seasons in total.

Did Supernatural's Walker Cameo Lead To The CW Reboot?

To some, Padalecki's transition into playing Walker may not have been much of a surprise. This is because Supernatural predicted the role in an unconventional way. In Supernatural season 6, episode 18, "Frontier Land," Sam and Dean are sent back to 1861 to retrieve the ashes of a phoenix. While there, the pair pick out fake names. Dean calls himself Clint Eastwood, then introduces Sam as a Texas Ranger named Walker. Though obviously not a direct prediction, this Walker cameo in Supernatural season 6 is a wild coincidence.

It may be tempting to label this brief moment of dialogue as the reason that Padalecki was cast as Walker, but that seems a bit too far-fetched, unfortunately. "Frontier Land" aired in 2011, and The CW did not start developing Walker until 2019. Furthermore, it seems unlikely that the Walker producers had this tiny moment of Supernatural in their minds when casting. More likely, Padalecki finished Supernatural at the perfect time to star in Walker, creating an impressively full-circle moment.

Walker and Sam are quite different characters, though they are portrayed by the same man. Throughout Supernatural's 15 seasons, Sam was characterized as the more sensitive of the brothers, often arguing for fairness and justice rather than reckless violence. On top of that, Sam had a better grip on his feelings and was able to convey them in a way that Dean could not. This is quite different from Walker, whose main trouble is reconnecting with his family after being away for two years. Where Sam is in touch with his emotions, Walker is still trying to come to terms with his.

In this way, Walker is much more like Dean than Sam. Both men are somewhat gruff and are skilled at what they do. They have a deep-seated sense of duty, which often creates tension in their personal lives. Most of all, Walker and Dean both struggle to show how they feel, even when it comes to the people they care most about. Fortunately, Padalecki succeeds at playing both roles, making Walker a nice change from Supernatural.
