Tai Makes A Great Point About Jackie’s Death In Yellowjackets Season 3 Episode 1

This article contains SPOILERS for Yellowjackets season 3, episodes 1 & 2!As tensions rise in the wilderness in Yellowjackets season 3, episodes 1 and 2, Tai makes a great point about what really led to Jackie’s death in back season 1. While the team has made it out of the winter without any more casualties, Yellowjackets’ teen characters are finding themselves at odds with one another more than ever. The biggest source of division at the beginning of season 3 is between Shauna and Mari, which has involved physical violence during an innocent game, accusations of food tampering, and petty resentments that affect the whole group.
At a certain point, Tai confronts Natalie about the hostility between Mari and Shauna, worrying that it could escalate into something far more catastrophic than their smaller aggression so far. Since Natalie was crowned the Antler Queen in Yellowjackets season 2’s ending, she’s taken on the leadership role among the teens, but hasn’t done much to step in and nip these festering arguments in the bud. To prove how serious it could become, Tai reminds Nat about how Jackie and Shauna’s seemingly harmless arguments ultimately led to the former’s death – a great point that the teens often seem to forget.

Jackie's Death Could Have Easily Been Avoided
Since Jackie’s death was an accident that they couldn’t have foreseen, it’s often overlooked that it could have been avoided by the girls working out their petty issues with one another in more constructive ways. In Yellowjackets’ season 1 finale, Shauna and Jackie publicly confronted each other about the former sleeping with Jeff, exposing one another’s hidden secrets, sharing resentments about their unbalanced friendship, and launching insults at the other in front of everyone else. At the end of the argument, Shauna made Jackie sleep outside, only for Jackie to freeze to death after snow suddenly started falling overnight.
Jackie wouldn’t have died that night if she and Shauna had worked out their problems before getting to such a dire point, proving Tai’s suggestion that everything is life and death in the wilderness. Shauna didn’t intend for Jackie to die or be harmed that night, and the same mistake could happen to any of them when trying to punish each other for petty arguments. If Natalie forces Shauna and Mari to make peace, then they can avoid another senseless death like Jackie’s.

The Teens Haven't Learned From What Led To Jackie's Death
Given the fact that Jackie indirectly died as a result of these animosities that Nat chalks up to “dumb girl s***” in season 3, the teens should have been far more careful to avoid letting these resentments fester to such extremes. Jackie’s death should have made them come together and remember that they’re stronger when unified, but any progress they made in that direction is gone in Yellowjackets season 3, episodes 1 and 2. Instead, they seem more distant from each other than ever, which makes another brutal, unnecessary death all the more likely in Yellowjackets season 3.
