The Batman 2 Director Matt Reeves Addresses Recent Release Date Delay And Offers Positive Update: "This Next Year Is About ... Getting The Movie Going"
Matt Reeves gives a candid update about The Batman 2 as the world waits for the highly anticipated DC sequel starring Robert Pattinson. While James Gunn's DC Universe is set to launch on the big screen this year, the Elseworlds side of DC Studios is still going, with Reeves' The Batman universe set to continue Pattinson's era with the Dark Knight. However, The Batman 2 was recently delayed to October 1, 2027, and since it won't be out for two years, many are wondering what's going on behind the scenes with the sequel.
In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Reeves was directly asked why The Batman 2 had to be delayed to 2027. The writer and director, who's currently working on the script and has been for some time, explained that this was about finishing the screenplay for the sequel, as he shared the following:
Because we're still finishing the script and there have been so many things going on. This next year is about getting into production and getting the movie going.
What Matt Reeves' The Batman 2 Comments Mean For The DC Sequel
With Reeves' comments about The Batman 2's release, it's key to remember some crucial factors as to why the script hasn't been finished yet. Initially, The Batman 2 was going to start filming in late Fall 2023, but given the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes that occurred that year, it delayed the completion of writing and, as a result, the start of filming. After being pushed to 2026, it allowed the team to have more time in the pre-production stages.
It's also crucial to keep in mind that, since the formation of DC Studios, there has been a big regime change; Gunn and Peter Safran are now overseeing everything DC in TV, film, and animation. While The Batman 2 will remain within its own universe, there have likely been a lot of talks between DC Studios and Reeves about how they are going to navigate his franchise without conflicting with the planned DCU slate. Reeves is also getting involved with other DC Studios productions, as he is a producer on the DCU's Clayface movie and the upcoming animated Dynamic Duo film, meaning he has more responsibilities than ever.
Our Take On Matt Reeves' The Batman 2 Comments
As frustrating as it may be for fans to have to wait another year for The Batman 2, Reeves' comments make perfect sense as it will also make the waiting period worth it in the long run. Rather than being forced to rush his script process, Reeves and his team are getting the proper time to make sure The Batman 2 is as strong as possible. Following his newest comments, more updates about The Batman 2 will hopefully emerge in the coming months.
