"The Collected Dreams & Nightmares Of Darth Vader": The Monkey Director Gives The Best Star Wars Pitch I've Ever Seen

TheMonkey director Osgood Perkins shares his pitch to dive into the psyche of a StarWars icon when asked if he would ever develop a project for the franchise. The son of Psycho icon Anthony Perkins and a former actor, the director has previously made a name for himself in the horror genre through 2020's Gretel and Hansel and 2024's Longlegs. His latest feature, TheMonkey, is a twisted Stephen King tale of a cursed toy bringing incredibly brutal deaths to a family.

Following the release of TheMonkey, Osgood took part in a Reddit AMA, where he was asked what his dream project would be. The director stated his ideal story would dive into the psyche of Sith Lord Darth Vader. Check out his response below:

Perkins' Pitch Can Fulfill Many Fans' Desires

While many people are hoping for Star Wars' expansion onto television to result in a Vader-centered project, Perkins' pitch could easily stand out as something truly special. Rather than opting to capture a story from Vader's life, his pitch is more abstract and open, which could offer plenty of creative freedom to step outside the reality and limitations of the canon. Furthermore, an anthology format could allow other artists to join him and add their own interpretations in the vein of Star Wars: Visions.

With this in mind, animation may seem like the best medium to tackle such a project, as a studio could have more creative freedom to develop visuals that step far out of what reality can offer while also taking advantage of a medium in which Lucasfilm has long excelled. However, with Perkins' background in live-action horror, his potential Vader project could instead perhaps cross mediums and allow for a mix of live-action and animated episodes, taking inspiration from Star Trek's Short Treks.

Dreams and nightmares play an integral part in the rise of Darth Vader. Visions of losing loved ones and a need for control and power to prevent them from happening sent Anakin Skywalker down the path of the Dark Side. As such, Perkins' pitch feels like a natural way to build on a character that audiences are already well-acquainted with, thanks to almost 48 years of storytelling. Furthermore, the production could allow the series to try something new, rather than expanding on the familiar, well-worn path of Vader's time serving the Empire.

Diving into the psyche of Vader is also an angle that has worked incredibly well in other mediums, including Kieran Gillen, Charles Soule, and Greg Pak's respective comic runs. While the current era of on-screen Star Wars storytelling has done well in treating the character as a formidable threat, these comics have offered a much more character-focused journey, relying on the freedom of the medium to dive into his mind and bring his lore together. As such, the idea can bring these elements to a wider audience on the big screen and shine a new light on the character.
