The Expanse's True Spiritual Successor Is Coming To Prime Video & Will Be Perfect If You're Still Waiting For Season 7
The Expanse is one of the most beloved space operas of modern times, and for those still waiting to see if Amazon will allow the story to continue, there's another sci-fi show coming to the same platform that should scratch that very same itch. Ever since The Expanse season 6's ending, a few different shows have attempted to fill the void. For instance, Apple TV+'s For All Mankindsometimes feels almost like an unofficial prequel to The Expanse. However, the truest replacement yet has now been confirmed to be on the way.
Beginning life as a Syfy project, The Expanse was dropped after season 3. Thankfully, Amazon picked up the show and ran it for three more seasons before it ended. Even now, it remains one of the best shows on Amazon. Unfortunately, rewatching The Expanse means all the twists and turns don't have quite the same impact - despite the overall experience still being great. So, the platform that allowed the show to conclude is giving The Expanse fans something else to look forward to.
The Captive's War Is Coming To Prime Video & Is Written By The Same Authors As The Expanse
James S.A. Corey is behind both projects
The Expanse is based on a series of sci-fi novels written by a duo called Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck - who work together under the pen name, James S.A. Corey. The acclaimed authors were also heavily involved in the live-action adaption process, and the show's success has earned them another Amazon space opera. The Captive's War is confirmed to be coming to the platform, and will also be based on Corey's literary works - a book trilogy, of which the first entry was published last year. Showrunner Naren Shankar is also returning (via Variety).
The Captive's War is set in a distant future where a group of humans is trying to survive alien oppression.
The Captive's War book trilogy is still in its early stages. Only the first novel, The Mercy of the Gods, has currently been published. That being said, book two is expected to arrive in September 2025. Given that The Mercy of the Gods only hit shelves in 2024, book three will likely hit shelves in 2026. So, although there's no indication of when the adaption will debut, all the source material will probably be complete very soon. It's even possible the books are being written in parallel to the show's development.
The Captive's War's Upcoming Adaptation Means There's Still Hope For The Expanse Season 7
The Expanse is over (for now) but could technically continue eventually
Even though The Expanse is over, there are more books were never adapted for the Amazon show. As such, many fans of the franchise are still holding out hope that The Expanse will eventually come back. There's been no word on that from the platform, but making The Captive's War could be seen as a positive sign. It's clear that Amazon still values the content of Abraham and Franck, otherwise, they wouldn't have agreed to work with them again. Therefore, perhaps The Expanse season 7's time-jumped setting can still be returned to after The Captive's War is complete.
