The Expanse Sequel 'Dragon Tooth' is A Must-See Story For Every Fan of The Show
Just over three years after its series finale, TV audiences are still mourning the conclusion of The Expanse. In those three years, a complicated matter of distribution rights has made hopes for a seventh season feel bleak. Still, The Expanse's legacy has enjoyed a cult following that has fans still wanting more from the franchise, one decade after the pilot episode first premiered.
Those same fans should be delighted to know that The Expanse continues through a comic book series produced by BOOM! Studios: Dragon Tooth. Thanks to a record-breaking Kickstarter campaign, Dragon Tooth is a 12-issue comic taking place between the events of two of the franchise's key novels.
Now is as opportune of a time as any for fans who miss the series to start reading Dragon Tooth, especially for fans reading the novels for the first time. Doing so not only bridges a narrative gap that will help understand the novels, but better enjoy them.
How Does The Expanse: Dragon Tooth Continue the Original Series?

Without giving too much away for new readers picking the series up for the first time, it is worth giving a quick overview as to how The Expanse: Dragon Tooth picks up where the show left off. The Rocinante and its crew are traveling through space two years after the Bombardment of Earth that closed out the sixth and final season. The usual suspects of the crew are still onboard, including James Holden as the ship's captain, Naomi Nagata, Amos Burton, and even Clarissa Mao as she continues to reel from her bloody revenge spree.
The Roci crew's next mission and objective are laid out in the first issue (again, no spoilers ahead), but the series continues to develop so much more than just its central story. The Expanse: Dragon Tooth goes out of its way to continue to expand the overall franchise lore in a way that both puts past moments in the series in a new light, and potentially sets up for the future. The series most certainly sets up a new twist regarding the Ring, as well as a life-changing theory about the Ring network itself.
The Expanse: Dragon Tooth Series Fills in A Gap in the Novels, Too
Perfectly Fills the Gap Between Babylon's Ashes and Persepolis Rising
In terms of James S.A. Corey's novels, Dragon Tooth picks up after Babylon's Ashes, the title of the sixth book in the novel series, as well as the name of the television show's Season 6 series finale. The next novel in the series is Persepolis Rising, whose plot synopsis says the following:
Twenty-eight years have passed since the events of Babylon's Ashes, and no one has heard from Admiral Winston Duarte and his rogue fleet in the decades since they broke away from the Martian Congressional Republic Navy and journeyed through the Laconia gate. They have spent their time in the Laconia system building an advanced fleet using leftover technology from the Protomolecule's creators, along with the sample of the Protomolecule they stole from Fred Johnson on Tycho. Duarte uses the Protomolecule to massively extend his life, planning to become the immortal emperor of the 1,300 worlds joined by the gates.
This makes perfect sense for a TV show sequel. In filling the gap between the novels and, essentially, the show, Dragon Tooth becomes essential reading material. For the completionist at heart who wants to understand the novels in the best way, The Expanse: Dragon Tooth is required reading.
