The Fantastic Four’s Trailer Totally Changed My Mind About The MCU Team’s Suits
While I had my doubts, the first trailer for Fantastic Four: First Steps has totally changed my mind about the new MCU team's suits. Set in a retro-futuristic reality during the 1960s, Marvel's First Family is debuting in an alternate timeline compared to the main MCU. As such, the team's blue and white costumes very much reflect the overall aesthetic and unique period of this new Earth.
As seen in the first trailer for Fantastic Four: First Steps, all four members of Marvel's First Family debut with a collection of impressive individual and group shots. However, one of the best moments is saved for last where the entire family is featured in costume. After seeing the MCU's Fantastic Four together and suited up, the initial concerns I had based on the movie's original promotional art have definitely been quelled.
The Fantastic Four: First Steps Trailer Shows Off The MCU Team's Suits At Their Best
An Epic Beatles-Inspired MCU Debut
The new trailer for Fantastic Four: First Steps does a great job of establishing the movie's unique vibe and aesthetic, feeling dated yet modern all at the same time. Likewise, the trailer perfectly culminates in the trailer's final shot with the First Family all together on a stage serving as a direct homage to The Beatles' 1964 debut on the Ed Sullivan Show (John, Paul, George, and Ringo were also known as The Fab Four). However, I was most impressed by the team's brand-new blue and white suits.
Looking at the MCU's new Fantastic Four altogether, it's very cool to see both the uniformity present and the unique features of each member's costume. For example, The Thing and Human Torch's white accents extend past the shoulders and down the arms. While the Invisible Woman's costume doesn't, more of her neck is covered, and the same goes for Mister Fantastic. However, Pedro Pascal's Mister Fantastic is the single member without white on his torso beyond the shared "4" logo, while The Thing is the only one without gloves. Overall, the costumes are quite simple as far as MCU suits are concerned (which I find to be quite refreshing).
I'm Glad To See The MCU's Fantastic Four Suits In The Trailer After Being Unsure About Them
I Was Skeptical After The First Images
While a simpler look for The Fantastic Four's costumes does fit the retro-future aesthetic, it's also just nice to see given the MCU's tendency to create over-designed costumes. Such was the case with John Krasinski's Mister Fantastic suit in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and its many black lines with an egregious amount of what's known as "piping". Sometimes, less can definitely be more.
That being said, I still had my doubts last year when Marvel Studios released Valentine's Day promotional art featuring the First Family with Reed and Sue in costume. Based on the initial artwork, the costumes looked almost like leisure wear rather than something superheroes would don to save the world, much less suits designed by Reed Richards using unstable molecules attuned to their respective abilities. As a result, I loved seeing the costumes in live-action with this first trailer for Fantastic Four: First Steps, as it's much easier to see their more modern utility (while still fitting the 60's retro style).
Why The Fantastic Four's MCU Suits Actually Work Quite Well
Fully Embracing The Movie's Retro-Future Aesthetic
Shown together and in live-action with their new costumes, it's easy to claim that the MCU's Fantastic Four is looking pretty great all around. The cohesion between their suits and the unique time period is on point. Each suit embodies a classic timelessness with nods to the original costumes from the comics, which is very cool to see Marvel Studios embrace.
That being said, the costumes could easily fit within a more modern setting as well, assuming the First Family one day makes their way to the main MCU timeline of Earth-616 as many expect them to. At any rate, I'm very glad I'm no longer skeptical about The Fantastic Four's new MCU suits. Now, I'm all kinds of excited to see what the team/family has in store when Fantastic Four: First Steps hits theaters later this year.
