The Gulf Season 3: Will It Happen? Everything We Know

The Gulf season 3 is the long-awaited next installment of the New Zealand crime drama and fans have been patiently waiting for any news about the project. While New Zealand may be best known for its fantasy movies and TV shows, the island country off the coast of Australia produces plenty of other genres. The Gulf is one of these series, a noir thriller that follows DSS Jess Savage (Kate Elliott), a detective who works on her home of Waiheke Island. In between cases, she also tries to solve the case of the mysterious death of her husband.

She's joined by DS Justin Harding (Ido Drent), and a cast of officers and locals all with their own secrets. The title The Gulf refers to the Hauraki Gulf which seperates Waiheke Island from the mainland, isolating Jess' home from the rest of the world. An underrated TV thriller that most people haven't heard of, The Gulf premiered in 2019 with its second season arriving in spring 2021. Since the season finale, there's been little to no news about the show, which has some fans wondering if The Gulf season 3 will ever arrive.

There has been virtually no news about The Gulf since season 2 ended. Actors, crew, and production have all been mum on whether the series will be returning or not and considering the last episode was in April 2021, it's likely that the show has been dropped. It's possible that the series will once again be picked up, but at the moment, there's no indication that The Gulf season 3 will be going into production.

If The Gulf season 3 does eventually get greenlit, it can be assumed who will be returning to the show based on the end of The Gulf season 2. Kate Elliott as Detective Senior Sergeant Jess Savage and Ido Drent as Detective Sergeant Justin Harding would certainly return to star. Other cast members who should return include Timmie Cameron as Ruby Savage, Dahnu Graham as A.J. Jackson, Alison Bruce as SS Denise Abernathy, Ross Brannigan as Constable Paul "Pup" Phillips, Mark Mitchinson as DI Ivan Petrie, and Bede Skinner as Alex Parsons.

However, with so much time in between the second and third season (if it airs),The Gulf could be forgiven for bringing in a whole new cast of characters.

While it's not currently known what The Gulf season 3 will be about, some story details can be gleamed from the end of the second season. At the end of The Gulf season 2, Jess finally confronts the person who's been blackmailing her and Harding meets his estranged sister Nadia, but things don't go as he planned them. The episode ends on a cliffhanger that season 3 should have picked right up on, but because it's going on four years, a new season could decide to do a time jump and do a soft reset for The Gulf season 3.
