The Harry Potter Remake's Best Voldemort Fancast Is Promising After The Actor's $2.4 Billion Superhero Series

As the Harry Potter TV remake continues to be in development, more ideas for the perfect cast continue to pop up, and the best choice for Voldemort is quite promising after the actor’s role in a successful superhero trilogy. The Harry Potter books are getting a new adaptation, only this time as a TV series, set to be released in 2026 on HBO. As such, the project is already looking for its cast, and fans of the books and movies have many ideas about who would be perfect for each character, and some of these have the support of the movies' cast and crew.

At the time of writing, the Harry Potter TV series has started the casting process for Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley, and some of the frontrunners for characters like Severus Snape and Hagrid have been revealed. Now, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and Chamber of Secrets' director Chris Columbus has shared his opinion on a popular fancast for Voldemort, supporting the idea of Cillian Murphy playing He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named – and a successful superhero trilogy proves he would be perfect for the character.

The Dark Knight Trilogy Makes A Great Case For The Harry Potter Show's Best Voldemort Fancast

Cillian Murphy Played Jonathan Crane/Scarecrow In The Dark Knight Trilogy

Fans of Harry Potter are understandably protective of the Harry Potter movie saga and the excellent casting choices for the movies – but they are also very passionate about getting the casting for the characters just right. As a result, there are already many ideas floating around on social media and forums about who would be the perfect choice for the key characters in Harry Potter, obviously including Voldemort. A fancast for Voldemort that has gained a lot of popularity is Cillian Murphy, and he has already proven he can be an excellent villain thanks to his role in The Dark Knight trilogy.

Crane was a corrupt psychologist who smuggled drugs into Gotham City with Carmine Falcone’s help.

In 2005, Christopher Nolan took over Gotham City with Batman Begins, with Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne/Batman. Despite Ra’s al Ghul (Liam Neeson) being the main villain in Batman Begins, it also introduced another villain: Jonathan Crane a.k.a. Scarecrow, played by Cillian Murphy. Crane was a corrupt psychologist who smuggled drugs into Gotham City with Carmine Falcone’s help. Crane developed a fear-inducing hallucinogen, which Ra’s planned to use to cause mass hysteria in Gotham and destroy the city. Despite being subdued by Batman with the fear-gas, Crane escaped.

Murphy’s Crane briefly returned in The Dark Knight, where Batman caught him and his thugs in a parking lot, after which he was arrested. Crane made a final (and surprise) appearance in The Dark Knight Rises, where, after being released from Blackgate Prison by Bane (Tom Hardy), he presided over a “kangaroo court” trial, giving the wealthy a choice between death and exile.

Despite his brief appearances in The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises, Murphy’s presence and performance were enough to establish him as one of the best villains in the Dark Knight trilogy, who used his expertise and knowledge to manipulate people in the deepest ways possible (that is, through their minds), torturing them in the process.

Why Cillian Murphy Is A Great Choice For The Harry Potter Villain

Cillian Murphy Has Proven He Can Be A Great Villain

In a career that has been going strong for almost three decades, Cillian Murphy has shown his incredible acting range in a variety of movies – from dramas like Oppenheimer to horror movies like 28 Days Later and A Quiet Place Part II to thrillers like Red Eye and comedies like Watching the Detectives. Batman Begins, however, brought out a villainous side of him that gained the praise of critics and viewers, showing yet another side of Murphy that proves he’s one of the most talented and versatile actors of his generation.

Murphy can be terrifying without any special makeup or costume, simply with the tone of his voice and how he communicates with his eyes. Murphy has a strong presence regardless of whether he’s playing a hero or a villain, a main or supporting character, but as a villain, it makes him even scarier and more interesting.

Voldemort is a character that inspires fear no matter what he does or says, and is so manipulative that he can gather a large group of followers that will do whatever he tells them to. Murphy can absolutely bring a character like that to life while giving him his unique acting style – less theatrical than Ralph Fiennes’, but commanding and scary.

The Harry Potter Remake Needs Someone Like Cillian Murphy To Follow Ralph Fiennes

Ralph Fiennes Set The Bar Too High For The Next Voldemort

The Harry Potter TV remake can absolutely have newcomers in its young cast, very much like the movies did, but its adult characters need some star power to draw in a larger audience. Ralph Fiennes’ performance as Voldemort is undeniably iconic, and he will serve as an example to all future Voldermort versions in other media, but the TV show needs someone well-known as the new He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named to carry on with what Fiennes started.

The Harry Potter TV remake has to have a solid cast so those who aren’t sold on the show will be drawn to it – and, of course, also so they can do justice to some of the most complex and beloved characters from this world. With Cillian Murphy’s recent successes and star power, he would be a perfect Voldermort casting for different reasons.
