The Night Agent Season 2 Ending: What Happened Between Peter & Rose Explained Creator & Series Stars
Warning: SPOILERS ahead for The Night Agent season 2!The Night Agent creator Shawn Ryan and series stars Gabriel Basso and Luciane Buchanan have explained what happened between Peter and Rose during the end of season 2. The Night Agent season 2 ended with Peter (Basso) and Rose (Luciane Buchanan) successfully thwarting a terrorist attack perpetrated by Markus Dargan (Michael Malarkey) on members of the UN. However, given how risky this mission was and Rose previously getting kidnapped by the antagonist, Peter says it's too dangerous for her to follow him anymore. The pair break up, with the main character wanting to ensure she stays safe by doing so.
Speaking with Netflix's Tudum about Peter and Rose's breakup, Ryan, Basso, and Buchanan offered details about why The Night Agent season 2 ended the pair's relationship. The showrunner explained the tragedy of sacrificing their romance, while Buchanan explained how everyone on set was silent as the breakup was filmed. Basso also weighed in, unpacking how their feelings for one another remain, but how Peter's role in Night Action will continually put her in danger he can't always protect her from. Check out what Ryan, Basso, and Buchanan had to say below:
Shawn Ryan: That’s something an unselfish person who really cares about Rose would say. Which makes it tragic in an almost Romeo and Juliet kind of way. ‘I love you too much to be with you’ — it’s important to honor that sacrifice.
Luciane Buchanan: Everyone [at the hotel] was just chatting and drinking while we’re trying to have this moment. Our great line producer, [Jean-]Paul Bernard, ran over and was like, ‘For five minutes, can you guys just be quiet?’
Gabriel Basso: Rose and Peter have been through a lot — but Luciane and I have been too,” he says. They brought those emotions to the split, which Basso says raises a lot of important questions, especially as Peter falls deeper into the dangerous world of Night Action. Is this a healthy relationship? He’s put Rose now in certain positions to lie, to do things that she doesn’t agree with. And then on top of that, he’s putting her at risk. So there’s this heaviness of, ‘Is this fair? Is [it] selfish for me to want you around?’ But they still definitely have love and support.
What Peter & Rose's Breakup Means For Their Future In The Night Agent
Will They Stay Apart Forever?
Following their breakup, Peter is taken into custody because of the information he funneled to Jacob Monroe (Louis Herthum) in exchange for information about where Markus was holding Rose. However, Catherine (Amanda Warren) eventually releases him, recruiting him as a double agent so they can take down Monroe and expose his role in getting Governor Hagan (Ward Horton) a guaranteed shot as President of the United States. This sets up a twisted and unpredictable story for The Night Agent season 3, but doesn't offer details about whether the two main characters will be working together again.
The pair's breakup makes sense based on everyone's analysis of their season 2 journey, since the dangers they faced are only bound to ramp up as Peter's missions get more dangerous. While she proved herself a valuable asset to the cast of The Night Agentthanks to her tech skills, Rose's safety is also a top priority for the protagonist, and something he's not willing to risk again. While that doesn't mean she won't appear in season 3, it does mean the duo might not be as close when next they see each other.
Our Take On Peter & Rose's Breakup In The Night Agent Season 2
Season 3 Will Probably Still Continue Their Storyline
Despite Peter and Rose's breakup, it would be surprising if they didn't team up once again in The Night Agent season 3, given the series' formula so far. Although it appeared to be a final decision so long as the protagonist remains in Night Action, his investigation of Monroe and Hagan could alter circumstances, depending on how the duo end up seeing one another again. As for their romance rekindling, it would depend on how close the main character is willing to get to her, given he's still prioritizing her protection.
The Night Agent season 3 is currently filming.
