The Night Agent Season 2: What Foxglove Is & What The Terrorists Plan To Do With It
Includes SPOILERS for The Night Agent season 2!
Netflix’s The Night Agenthas returned for its second season, and it introduces a new threat called Foxglove. Following The Night Agent’s season 1 ending, Peter Sutherland has been upgraded to being a proper Night Agent, and the sophomore season opens with him on a mission in Bangkok with a new partner, Alice. Just like season 1’s train explosion, the Bangkok mission goes awry, leaving Peter to unravel a massive conspiracy of international crime. This time, it’s related to the Bala crime family.
The Night Agent’s season 2 cast includes the introduction of several new characters, both friends and foes to Peter. He has a new ally in Catherine Weaver (Amanda Warren), but also mysterious new antagonists in the Bala family. Episode 2 reveals that a man named Warren (Teddy Sears) was in Bangkok delivering leaked intel to a buyer related to a mysterious name: Foxglove. Just before Peter can inquire more about what this could mean, Warren is shot and killed, sending Peter on his path to discover Foxglove on his own. This is the main plot of season 2, but it can still be confusing after it’s all over and done with.
Foxglove Is An Experimental Weapons Program Involving Deadly Chemical Agents
Foxglove Was A US Chemical Weapons Initiative
In The Night Agent season 2, episode 5, Catherine Weaver gives audiences the first description of Foxglove, explaining its origins. She states that "a few generals wanted to protect against a new generation of chemical warfare" and that they hired scientists to come up with a weapon concept that would involve modern technology and chemistry. Unfortunately, they ended up actually developing these highly dangerous weapons, and though production on them stopped due to their potential threat, it's far from impossible to make more, stealing the mobile lab used to create them.
Viktor Bala Previously Used A Foxglove Chemical Agent On His Citizens
The US Provided Viktor Bala With Foxglove's Gas Weapons To Test
The Night Agent’s Bala family are the primary antagonists of season 2. They’re a crime family from an unspecified country, where the family patriarch, Viktor Bala, was once the dictator. Season 2 reveals that Bala has since been convicted of war crimes and is in The Netherlands, though he still manages to pull the strings of his operation from his confinement. The war crimes he committed were gruesome and involved him ruthlessly using Foxglove on his own citizens. Viktor claims that the US sold him these weapons and then erased all evidence of it, providing his motive for revenge.
Much of The Night Agent season 2 sees Peter and Rose tracking down the information regarding Foxglove, as information broker Jacob Monroe has sold it to the Bala family. The initial mission in Bangkok sees Peter and his partner, Alice, attempting to stop Warren from handing off the information, forcing Jacob Monroe and his fixer, Solomon, to get involved and kill Alice. Viktor Bala is a cruel, malicious man who's held in prison in The Hague, and it's terrifying that he's still able to do all of this from behind bars, operating through his nephew, Markus.
What Is KX & Why Dr. Cole & Rose Were Forced To Make It In The Mobile Lab
KX Is Foxglove's Main Gas Weapon In The Night Agent
KX Gas is the central threat of The Night Agent season 2, and it's the main weapon that was produced by the Foxglove initiative before it was shut down. The chemicals were weaponized so vaccines could be developed for them. This is where Dr. Cole comes in, being the one who created the gas in the first place. Dr. Cole and Rose are kidnapped by Viktor Bala's crew and brought to the mobile Foxglove lab, where they're forced to make more of the gas.
Luckily, Peter learns from Jacob Monroe where exactly the KX gas is being made, and he's able to go in and rescue Rose
The Bala family spent most of the show's second season trying to gather the intel in order to create the weapons of Foxglove, and once they have it, they set their sights on the most deadly weapon possible. Luckily, Peter learns from Jacob Monroe where exactly the KX gas is being made, and he's able to go in and rescue Rose. He doesn't get there in time to prevent the gas from being made, however, leading to the Bala family's attack on the UN.
What The Bala Crime Family Plans To Do With The KX Batch Made From Foxglove
The Bala Family Attempted An Attack On The UN
The Night Agent's season 2 ending sees the Bala family's crew plant KX canisters in the UN building, with their plan being to commit a deadly terrorist attack on US soil. An attack on the UN would affect multiple countries, but Viktor Bala believes that the international organization is in the US's pocket and considers it a statement against America to do this. Markus Bala leads the placement of the KX canisters and intends to carry out the attack. However, Peter Sutherland ultimately thwarts the operation by leading a raid on the UN building.
Another important detail in The Night Agent season 2 regards the ongoing presidential election in the United States. The two candidates are Knox and Hagan, and the results of their race end up being tied to the Bala family's plans. Knox was involved in selling information related to Foxglove to the Bala family, and when Monroe has Peter retrieve proof of this information from the UN building, he threatens Knox with it, forcing the candidate out of the race. This allows Hagan to win the election, giving Monroe more power heading into season 3.
How The Bala's Foxglove Plan Failed In The Night Agent Season 2
Peter Sutherland & His Allies Prevented The Attack
After discovering the KX canisters, the UN building was evacuated, allowing Peter to lead a raid into the building. Despite the immense risk of this operation, the raid succeeds in clearing the building of all gas canisters. Markus manages to escape with his life and a final canister, taking it to a hotel where his cousin Tómas' girlfriend, Sloane, is staying. Markus doesn't tell her that he's already killed Tómas, and when she refuses to comply without seeing her boyfriend, he threatens her with a gun.
Peter arrives at the last minute to rescue Sloane and fight Markus, shooting him. The Bala threat is still real, with one last canister threatening the hotel. While Catherine evacuates the building, Rose deals with the final canister, concluding the Bala family's efforts in New York City. The Night Agent season 2's villains didn't end up succeeding, but Peter still heads into season 3 with a complicated situation on his hands, and the Foxglove initiative's inventions will always be a prevalent risk.
