The Summer of Superman is Finally Giving My Favorite Hero the Respect He Deserves
It's going to be a big year for Superman and DC Comics is going all out to honor the icon. Not only is the Man of Steel heading to the theaters in a much-anticipated reboot, but DC Comics is getting ready for a wave of stories sure to get every Superman fan pumped.
DC Comics has just revealed details about its upcoming Summer of Superman initiative, a brand-new publishing effort dedicated to shining a spotlight on the Man of Steel. From brand-new titles, to new story directions and other goodies, DC is honoring its greatest hero and I couldn't be more excited to see it.
The Summer of Superman Honors DC's Greatest hero
The Superman-Focused Initiative Starts This April
After teasing the initiative with the news of Dan Slott and Rafael Albuquerque's Superman Unlimited, DC Comics officially revealed its plans for the Summer of Superman. This initiative is meant to celebrate everything about the Man of Tomorrow, from Superman's first appearance to his incredible legacy. So what's involved in this initiative? The first is the final arc of the Superman Superstars initiative in Action Comics, which begins on April 9th in Action Comics #1085 by G. Willow Wilson and Gavin Guidry, which sees Superman attempt to stop a villain from sabotaging tech meant to curb global warming.
Fans will really get to see what’s in store in the coming months on April 16th with the Summer of Superman Special #1 by Dan Slott, Mark Waid, Joshua Williamson, and Jorge Jiménez. John Henry Irons and Lana Lang are finally tying the knot, but the event of the season is accompanied by threats that promise new conflicts for Superman and his allies. Williamson will remain on Superman with Dan Mora and on April 23rd, a new storyline begins in Superman #25 as Lex Luthor is back in action and ready to take back control of Metropolis from Superman.
On June 24th, Dan Jurgens and Lee Weeks, as well as 15 international creators, come together for Superman: The World, an anthology that shows what Superman means the entire world. July 1st will see the publication of Superman’s Good Guy Gang by Rob Justus, a graphic novel for young readers that sees Superman protecting the world with Hawkgirl and Green Lantern. And in celebration of Superman’s first appearance, the publisher will celebrate Superman Day on April 18th at participating retailers with special editions of classics such as All-Star Superman #1, Action Comics #1, and Superman: For All Seasons - Book One.
Superman is Getting the Celebration He Deserves
A Big Summer Promotion Will Be Good For Superman
It shouldn’t be that much of a surprise that DC Comics is choosing to honor Superman this summer. After all, James Gunn’s Superman movie will be out in July and already the internet is buzzing with excitement (no doubt thanks to that stellar trailer). Not to mention it's been over a decade since Superman’s last solo film, so it’s understandable that DC Comics would want to do its part and hype up its incredible icon with an initiative meant to put Superman on everyone’s radar.
To DC’s credit, it has been giving the Man of Steel a lot of love lately. Aside from the previously mentioned Superman Superstars initiative that showcased several amazing stories and creative teams, the publisher also debuted Absolute Superman as part of its new Absolute line of comics. But this initiative isn’t about padding out the market with Superman stories for when the movie hits. The Summer of Superman is a push that’s really meant to honor the hero, by celebrating his past and taking bold steps into the future.
I’ve been a Superman fan for as long as I’ve been reading comics, and while he’s never been kicked to the curb, I’ve always felt he never got the same push that Batman has (no hate to the Dark Knight). But with so much energy surrounding the Big Blue Boy Scout, I’m ecstatic to see that DC Comics is capitalizing on that opportunity and running with it. And best of all, this is just the beginning. If there’s one thing I can tell, it’s that DC has a lot of plans for Superman in 2025.

Big Things Are Coming Later This Year
While the full scope of the Summer of Superman is unknown for now, DC Comics really wants this to be something fans are excited about. Based on what DC Comics has revealed so far, this summer is going to be packed with action-packed moments, stunning developments, and stories that showcase just how awesome the Man of Steel really is. And it all starts in April when the Summer of Superman officially begins.
