“They Should Cancel”: Stephen King Won’t Vote For 2025 Oscars, Adding His Voice To Cancellation Calls

Stephen King says that he will not vote in the 2025 Oscars. This year marks the 97th Academy Awards, where acclaimed 2024 movies like Emilia Pérez, Anora, The Brutalist, and A Complete Unknown will likely be in contention for Best Picture and other major awards. The nominations for this ceremony were originally supposed to be announced on Friday, January 17, but were extended twice due to disruptions from the fires that have devastated Southern California. Now, the nominations will be announced on Thursday, January 23, barring further disruptions. The Oscars ceremony will remain on Sunday, March 2.

Speaking on social media, King provides his take on this year's Oscars still happening despite the fires. The prominent horror author reveals that he will not be voting in this year's Oscars ceremony. He even calls for the event not to take place, saying "IMHO they should cancel them." King goes on to say that there is "No glitz with Los Angeles on fire."

What This Means For The Oscars

Other Stars Have Called For The Oscars Cancelation

King is not the first person to suggest that the Academy cancel the Oscars ceremony this year. Hacks starJean Smart is one of the more prominent voices who have suggested calling off the Oscars telecast, writing that the networks planning to televise the Oscars should not do so and instead donate "the revenue they would have gathered to the victims of the fires and the firefighters." Actor Rosanna Arquette posted a similar suggestion, offering the idea that the Oscars, Grammys, and SAG awards should all become "telethons to raise money for the community."

While these prominent Hollywood voices argue for calling off the Oscars, there are others who disagree with this stance. They have said that Los Angeles needs the employment the Oscars provides, as one of the biggest yearly events in the city. As in the case of Arquette, some stars have suggested that the Oscars telecast should not be called off at all but should be leveraged as a platform to raise money for the victims of the fires. As of now, the Academy has maintained its stance that the Oscars are still happening.

Our Take On The Oscars Cancelation

The Oscars Has A Massive Platform

The Academy is hesitant to move the Oscars' date, let alone cancel the ceremony entirely. The catastrophic fire emergency in LA does put the organization in a tough position. On the one hand, Hollywood awards are far from the biggest issue in this natural disaster. On the other hand, the telecast usually reaches millions of people, so if the Academy were willing to use it as a fundraising platform, it could rake in a lot of money for charity.
