This Wednesday Season 2 Theory Solves A Big Problem With Jenna Ortega’s Netflix Show And Makes It Even More Exciting
With fans gearing up for Wednesdayseason 2's release, there is one theory that will solve a big problem for the Netflix show, making it more exciting. Wednesday was highly rated when it was released, as it followed Jenna Ortega playing a different version of Wednesday Addams that had never been seen before. Season 1 is full of twists and turns as Wednesday settles into Nevermore Academy, whilst investigating a string of murders that all lead to the shocking betrayal of Ms. Thornhill (Christina Ricci), who had been manipulating Tyler (Hunter Doohan) into killing people to resurrect Joseph Crackstone (William Houston).
Wednesday season 2 aims to be released this year, and many are excited to see the titular character return, especially after the finale teased a new foe. While returning home in the Addams Family hearse, Wednesday receives some strange texts from an unknown number, claiming that they are watching her. The events of the finale seem to hint at Wednesday season 2's plot being centered around Wednesday investigating her mysterious stalker, which could cause problems for the show as it risks repeating elements of season 1. However, there is a theory that may not be the case at all.
Wednesday's Mysterious Stalker Won't Be Season 2's Main Plot – Theory Explained
The Stalker Could Be A Red Herring For A Bigger Story In Wednesday Season 2
Despite her discovery of the stalker being the last we saw of Wednesday, the stalker may not actually be a part of Wednesday season 2's main plot. While it is evident that things will most likely begin with the proposed stalker storyline, there is a theory that there may be a bigger and more exciting storyline in place towards the end of Wednesday's second season. For example, Wednesday season 1's finale also suggests that the Hyde could return as it shows Tyler is still able to morph into the monster, so there could be a revenge plot.
Furthermore, the Wednesday season 2 first look video does not hint at a stalker storyline at all, although this was likely done to keep plot details secret. However, Tim Burton and the production team are attempting to match the scale of season 1, promising season 2 will be "bigger and more twisted than you can ever imagine," speaking of supposedly grander conflicts. Ultimately, a stalker storyline would not live up to the dramatics seen in the BTS feature or match season 1's murder mystery, which suggests another larger-scale plot may come into play.
Wednesday's Stalker Identity Story Risks Being Too Similar To Season 1's Murder Mystery
Wednesday Needs A New Premise To Avoid Repeating Season 1
Although there is an aim to recreate the success of Wednesday season 1, the investigation into the stalker's identity may mean the Netflix show repeating the same old storyline. Season 1 is all about Wednesday finding out who is killing people and who the Hyde is, with the titular character employing all her detective skills while trying not to get herself killed. This was an exciting premise, as there was always a bit of risk to Wednesday's mission. However, in order to make Wednesday season 2 better than the first season, it needs to have a higher level of tension.
With Wednesday trying to find out who the stalker is, Wednesday season 2 could repeat the murder mystery trope, making the show feel cyclic and boring. Furthermore, while there are no current details as to the extent Wednesday's stalker will take things, as a fictional foe, a stalker is less threatening than a murderer because there is no physical action, just tension. While this may have been a perfect plot for season 1, Wednesday season 2 needs to have something bigger happening to make the show feel different, more thrilling, and outdo its highly rated action-packed first season.
Wednesday Quickly Resolving The Stalker Mystery Would Be A Great Start For Season 2
Wednesday Could Shock Fans With Another Reveal
Instead of focusing on the stalker storyline as season 2's main plot, Wednesday could take the show in a different direction by having Wednesday solve the stalker mystery right at the start. If Wednesday revealed who the stalker was from the outset, then fans would have no idea what to expect for the rest of the season, especially considering plot details are kept heavily under wraps. Jenna Ortega has hinted at Wednesday season 2's story involving supernatural characters in an interview with Vanity Fair, so expanding the supernatural world could take precedence over the stalker plot point:
"It might be time to start getting a little more sarcastic again or watching different movies again to get into the mindset. But even reading scripts has been exciting, seeing all of the new characters that are coming in. We're definitely expanding on the supernatural world. Our show had all sorts of werewolves and vampires and da-ta-da. And I think we expand on that a little bit.
"I mean, in the first season we had episodes that really stood out visually, like the dance episode was a really big one for people, and that setting was very particular and it felt like Prom Night, a little bit, or Carrie. Every episode [of season two] that I've read so far is like that. It just stands out on its own as a very memorable scene or bit or setting, which I think is what I'm most excited for, because to pull that off for eight episodes is, I think, really incredible and really lucky."
Wednesday season 2's surprise casting of Lady Gaga also adds to the theory that the stalker may not be the biggest reveal, due to her status as a high-profile actress and singer and the finite amount of screen time. If Wednesday can happily reveal that such a famous person as Lady Gaga is joining their cast list, it does make audiences wonder what other things they are keeping secret. By carefully teasing a Lady Gaga appearance in addition to the stalker storyline, they could be setting up a certain perception of season 2 as a misdirection, with the real surprises coming later.
Why Wednesday Season 2 Must Move Away From The Teen Mystery Drama Formula
Comedy Horror Should Be The Focus Of Wednesday Season 2
Ortega's comments regarding each Wednesday season 2episode being like Carrie also imply that season 2 may be making an effort to move away from its teen mystery drama genre. Wednesday'spiranha pool scene is a good example of comedy horror in season 1, and it definitely feels like the Wednesday Addams everyone is familiar with from The Addams Family. Therefore, it is a shame that more moments like that aren't prevalent in season 1, as the flagship series follows a teen mystery drama formula instead. Yet, while this worked for season 1, the story can get repetitive fast.
Repeating the same teen drama tone with season 2 would take away from Wednesday's darker characteristics.
Wednesday season 2 leaning into horror would tie into its Addams Family origins, making Ortega's character feel more authentic and akin to the source material. The premise of Wednesday season 1 made the comedy horror tone difficult to achieve as Netflix's Wednesday Addams is older than her original counterpart, and thus considerations of romantic pursuits and newfound connections at Nevermore Academy took precedence, as these dynamics are important for her age range. However, repeating the same teen drama tone with season 2 would take away from Wednesday's darker characteristics, and may make Wednesday strayeven further from its origins.
Jenna Ortega is also a producer for Wednesday season 2.
The Netflix show's decision to drop Percy Hynes White, who played Wednesday's love interest Xavier Thorpe, may help Wednesday to move away from its teen mystery drama. With Tyler locked up — although season 1's finale teases this may be temporary — and Xavier no longer in Wednesday season 2, Wednesday's love triangle has been broken, leaving season 2 open to become an authentic comedy horror adaptation. Moreover, if Wednesday did lean into the comedy horror genre, quickly resolving its dramatic stalker setup from season 1 would be the perfect way to subvert viewer expectations and introduce its new tone.
