TMNT Is Passing Casey Jones' Mask to Another Hero... And Their Identity Will Break 90s Fans' Minds
WARNING! Spoilers for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #6Fans were worried at the end of the last issue of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, as it looked like vigilante Casey Jones had been taken out permanently. Fortunately, the latest issue reveals that Jones survived being shot by New York City District Attorney Hieronymus Hale, although the mask-wearing vigilante isn’t out of the woods yet. In the meantime, it looks like another character might be picking up the mask in Jones’ stead.
In Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #6 by Jason Aaron and Juan Ferreyra, the Foot ninja clan continues to slowly take power in New York via DA Hale. The last issue told of how Hale came into power and found himself working for the Foot, which resulted in the formation of the government-funded Foot Patrol. Casey Jones took to the streets to protect protesters, but was ultimately captured - leading to a surprising hero taking up his mask.
In the previous issue’s shocking final moments, Hale himself shot Jones point-blank. In the aftermath shown in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #6, April O'Neil literally picks up Casey's mask while visiting him in the hospiral, suggesting that she may also be picking up his mission.
TMNT's Casey Jones Is In a Coma - And April O'Neil May Be Taking His Place
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #6 by Jason Aaron, Juan Ferreyra, and Shawn Lee
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #6 reveals that Casey survives being shot in the chest, although he’s currently in the hospital in a coma. A heartbroken April O’Neil visits his bedside, but she’s saving her tears for now. Instead, April seems to have revenge on her mind, saying whoever did this “will answer for their crimes. I can promise you that.” She then picks up his famous hockey mask, which seems to suggest that she’ll be picking up Casey’s mission by donning his mask and going after the Foot herself.
If April will indeed be donning Casey’s mask sometime in the near future, it could make for a pretty exciting development in the TMNT world. The IDW continuity portrayed April as an intern at StockGen Industries who befriends the Turtles, who were mutated while under her care. Once StockGen is attacked by Foot ninja, April decides to take some self-defense courses from new friend Casey Jones, eventually becoming a formidable warrior in her own right. While the two characters have always been closely tied together, April has never actually worn Casey’s mask before to become a vigilante in her own right.
Our Take On April O’Neil Donning Casey Jones’ Mask
A Historic First for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
New writer Aaron has found several ways to interpret classic TMNT lore in new ways, andhaving April don Casey’s mask and join up with the Turtle brothers in their fight against the Foot would be pretty cool. The enemy ninja clan has completely infiltrated New York City at seemingly every level, banning mutants from the city, so the Turtle brothers are going to need all the help they can get in their fight. If April does indeed wind up donning Casey Jones’ hockey mask, she would no doubt be a valuable ally to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT) is a multi-media franchise that began with Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird’s comics in the 1980s. Throughout the years, their comic books expanded to movies, TV shows, video games, and toys. Most notably, the animated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles ran for nearly a decade and has become a nostalgic staple of the ‘80s and ‘90s. Several other movies have featured the four anthropomorphic turtle brothers (Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello, and Raphael), including the trilogy of live-action films in the ‘90s and the more recent movies Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and its sequel Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows.
