Tom Hanks & Carrie Fisher Movie Getting TV Reboot Adds 5 Stars, Including Night Court & What We Do In The Shadows Actors
The upcoming television reboot of The 'Burbs has had a huge influx of new cast members. The original 1988 movie, which was directed by Joe Dante, starred Tom Hanks and Carrie Fisher as suburban married couple Ray and Carol Peterson, whose lives are turned upside down when Ray begins to suspect the new neighbors of dangerous behavior. The upcoming 'Burbs TV show is being developed by Peacock. Produced by Brian Grazer and Seth MacFarlane, the reboot is set to be led by Nope and One of Them Days star Keke Palmer.
Per Variety, the 'Burbs reboot has fleshed out its main cast with five new stars. Jack Whitehall, Julia Duffy, Paula Pell, Mark Proksch, and Kapil Talwalkar have all boarded the project as series regulars. Whitehall will be playing the husband of Keke Palmer's character, though the characters played by the remaining four stars are still under wraps. Nzingha Stewart (Daisy Jones & the Six, How to Get Away with Murder) will also be joining the show behind the camera as an executive producer and the director of the first episode.
What This Means For The ‘Burbs TV Show
The Cast Has A Strong Comedy Pedigree
Even though their characters are still largely unknown, the incoming cast members should provide the comedy of The 'Burbs with a huge boost regardless of where they are placed. They all have ample experience in the genre, with former SNL writer Paula Pell being fresh off a stint in the musical comedy Girls5eva, stand-up comedian Jack Whitehall having recently appeared in Apple TV+'s The Afterparty, and Julia Duffy already being a television icon thanks to her role in the 1980s sitcom Newhart.
Since Newhart ended in 1990, Julia Duffy has appeared in a variety of TV shows including Looking, Scream Queens, Palm Royale, Night Court, Shameless, Reba, and Wizards of Waverly Place.
The 'Burbs also marks a major move in the careers of two of its stars, who have recently exited major comedies. The first would be Mark Proksch, who played the energy vampire Colin Robinson as part of the main cast of What We Do in the Shadows, which just ended in December after running for six seasons. This marks his official return to television, at the same time giving Kapil Talwalkar his first series regular television role since he departed the cast of the Night Court reboot after playing clerk Neil in season 1.
Our Take On The Incoming 'Burbs Cast
The Show's Ensemble Is Impressive
This new influx of cast members can only help The 'Burbs. While Keke Palmer is already a well-regarded actor with a recent comedy hit on her hands thanks to One of Them Days, the cast now has a cumulative 22 Primetime Emmy Award nominations and three wins. Their prestige as a group could potentially attract a similarly decorated guest cast, which could help make the show shine in a way that it stands on its own despite the cult classic status of the original iconic movie upon which it is based.
