A good introduction to desert hiking, this easy-going, 1.1-mile loop in Valley of Fire State Park winds through a slot canyon and passes colorful sandstone formations. From the trailhead, follow the well-marked trail south between massive rocks and descend a set of sand-covered steps to the bottom of a wash.
After 0.3 mile, pass the old movie set for The Professionals and bear right into a wash bordered by The Narrows, a short slot canyon with towering rock walls. Squeeze through the slot, then turn right at the marked trail junction on the other side. Head north for 0.4 mile (past more rock formations and seasonal wildflowers) to the park road and turn right for the 0.1-mile stretch back to the trailhead.
