Consumers encounter so many mixed messages on produce, ranging from the Dirty Dozen‘s disinformation to the just-eat-your-veggies slogan. How do we know if these messages are resonating with people? And maybe more importantly–who’s winning?

A recent survey by the Alliance for Food and Farming shows that consumers are increasingly confident about produce safety. Overall, consumer concerns about produce safety declined by 20 percent since 2016. Over that same time, consumer concerns over pesticide residues has decreased by 10 percent.

Based on the results, AFF concluded that consumers respond favorably to consistent, science-based information, especially in response to disinformation. So when you share a post from your favorite ag blogger debunking the Dirty Dozen, it really is changing minds!

The survey also shows that consumers trust farmers to tell them the truth about agriculture and growing food. And people generally have trust in government regulations to protect public health. Altogether, the results is that consumer confidence is produce safety is growing!

It’s so encouraging to get statistical feedback showing that “agvocating” efforts really are helping. Because at the end of the day, that’s why I do all of this. I want everyone to have the trust, confidence, and security knowing that our food supply is safe, nutritious, and healthy.
